I need to know what is going to be the best stroke to use with 3 5/8 pistons in an H block to get the most H.P. using stock rods. Im am thinking 5 1/4 or a 5 1/2. What kind of clearence work is going to be involved. Any advive is helpful.

Thank you, Miles

Miles, you can go 3.625 X 5.25 with out too much trouble and still use the stock rods. you will have to grind on the cam and around in the block but it wont be anything too crazy and it will still leave you enough material on everything that you won't have to rebuild it every winter.

You cant go wrong with a Marlatt engine. The set ups are track proven. The workmanship and quality parts are unmatched any where. He has always exceded my expectations.

Dont know, never tried at 3-5/8 over 5 inch stroke. Id say no, the notches will take out alot of material at 5.5 X 3-5/8. Bigger bore, smaller shallower notches. Smaller bore, deeper notches. Bigger bores can mean lots of piston selections. Chad

5.5 stroke. 3.75 bore, good carb, and intake with the head flowed would be a fun little engine. JMHO. Cranks over a 1 inch stroke can cost more than one thas 3/4 or less. So if your thinking of going up to 1 inch, may as well go a bit bigger for the cost. Chad

The small bore is whats going to limit your stroke. The rods will hit the bottom of the cyl wall at much over 5 inches with a 3-5/8 bore, even with the block notched in this area. Bigger bore will let more room for them to swing and larger stroke can clear with less grinding. Im not saying it cant be done the way you described, but be leary, could crack and leak water in the oil. At 1 inch stroke, your looking at cutting the inbetween the lobes of the cam and actually widening out the distance between lobes, and cutting the diameter of the cam too. Your gonna have to either get a set of rods made, or grind down a set of stock rods. Light block notching in some of the webbing of the block, at the oil galleries where the rods pass by, (not enough to go thru the casting though) and at the botom of the cyl bores for the rods to clear the bottom of the block. Are you putting this thing together, or are you getting it done? Chad

If you were me and had to stay with that bore size what would you go with on stroke and what kind of h.p. will it make.

Miles

5.25, Id say you could run in a 15.5 cut tire class, with a rule spec hitch, 3500-4000lb classes, depending on the tracks, 2nd gear most of the time on tight tracks and have good power. Chad
