JD G copper gasket question

I'm going back together with a copper gasket on my JD G puller after the original let go. I don't have any experience with these and didn't know if I needed to do anything different when putting it on. I've had some tell me I need to spray something on it. Should I use the copper washers that are normally used with a factory head gasket? Thanks for any help.

Hi there I assume you are using a flat head?? If you don't have the deck of the head supported you will never make a head gasket last very long. They tend to flex when under high compression. Most likely it gave out towards the top where the water jacket is. That's because the head surface is moving. I have a G that is 11.25 to 1 compression with a stock JD head gasket. Works fine but you need to O ring it if you have any excess compression.

This is actually with a cyclone head. My tractor is 8.75" x 6.25" with compression somewhere in the 11:1 range. The head gasket never actually blew but all my power was gone and the guys that checked the head looked at the gasket and said it was burning through pretty good and that's probably where I was losing it. That starts to get over my head a little so I figured I'd check on here.

copper gaskets came on johns .but to use a copper gasket on any others the key is to have either the block or head oringed. you can use a product called hi-tack on them or any head gasket. it makes them tacky .

We tried a copper gasket on our Farmall H without much luck they told me we should of have the block shaved so it was perfectly smooth other wise they will not seal. Tried the copper gasket sealer without any success so we went back to the stock gasket and got it sealed up.I have been told they are difficult to get to seal.

Gaskets have a more difficult time keeping a seal on a mirror finished surface. The surface has to be flat and have grinding stone "tracks". The "rough" surface bites into and holds the gasket from sliding sideways.

Yes I agree with buickanddeere that is a good point. One thing nobody has mentioned yet are you having a detonation problem??? Do you have any water temperature issues? Well a cylone head shouldn't flex. They are much stronger.
