What gear do you pull your 400 in. I pull mine in 1st on the high side and my tractor chokes out.I have my hitch set at 19 1/2 inches high and 20 inches from the center of the rear axle. I still think that my tractor should be making more power. after the weight of the sled comes up It will choke down to about 400 rpms and pull about 30 feet at that rpm and then choke out. I have 15.5 38. 281 cubes 150 lbs of compression in each cylinder. I pull 5600 pound class what does the problem sound like to you. it will not spin out.

Still need to get that thing on a dyno. Would take a real killer track to choke A 400 in 5850.

F400, why not pull in Low Range? That way you could spin-out, & see how you are weighted & how your drawbar works. And with that 14 to 1 compression, you won't be able to get that engine to lug, it will need to be way up on the curve to put out power.

Without CCing the engine, I can't say for sure what the exact ratio is but I can assure you that it isn't 14:1 with only 150psi. Maybe 7-8:1 but not more

I wish I could give you a step by step of what to do to get you your much needed hp. How does your distance pulled compared to others? What does your plugs look like? Lean--Rich. I hate Champion and prefer Autolite 388 in all of tractors except for my G. Have you tried it without the oilbath, perhaps the wire mesh is clogged and restricting your air flow. How is the timing? Do you have access to a dyno? There is where you can really gain from playing around with the timing. What are your valves set at?

Sorry I'm just throwing ideas out being it is so hard without seeing the tractor in action.

We bought the 400 late in the summer of 2000 which was when I was rebuilding my JD G. With the 14.9x38 Armstrongs (45deg bars), even with good balance the tires never gave us the traction we needed. Last summer we added new 15.5x38 Firestone F&R, didn't really pull it much. My father in law's health wasn't real good and I was tweaking my G. Hope to redesign the hitch this summer and get some road wear on the tires. We are permitted to use the TA so we bounce back and forth between the high and low side. Most pulls are low gear but when permitted I like 2nd in 6500 and first in 7500, 8500 & 9500.

Not really sure, the tractor is kept 2 1/2 hrs from Washington. I plan on pulling the fair unless some thing comes up. Wanted to pull Portersville but ended up working.
