Best was to test & tune a tractor I've heard of. The dyno is more accurate than the seat of the pants. Easier and safer to monitor EGT etc too. 1% loss per gear mesh is a rough rule of thumb. The flexing of the tires will use a bit of HP too.

I wonder if Knobby turf tires would work on that setup, maybe a smoother ride while testing? the 15.5s would rob some power,, wonder what the differences would be with different size tires? Chad

I"m sure it won"t work as good as your magic dyno.

Was it an exceleration dyno.. or a load dyno?? (I'm guessing from you discription it was a load dyno... mustang??)

It would have been interesting to see the results in different gears.

well to answere some .the dyno is a 1800lb drumm with a electric brake and computer software . that measures the rpm from the crank and rpm of drum .elevation humidity and air to fuel ratios are also looked at.and yeah ive not really ever seen 1 horse per cube on pulling tractors . i didnt think the question was stupid because some autombiles parisitic loss to rear wheels is 70 to 100 horsepower loss depending on transmission.since the dyno was really designed for automotive use these numbers of loss are known. for tranny of diferent makes .as for truly red the last years motor had know promblem with 100 horse h,s and this one feals alot stronger. oh i did pull 15.5 38 cut tire on the dyno. they bounce bad but it was agood way i think to break the motor in .

I would like to know more about this chassis dyno. I"ve been thinking of designing a platform with a roller that you could connect a pto dyno to. What type of tire did you use, I wouldn"t want to use my cut pulling tires, but I think you would want something with about the same circumference to know what HP your getting to the ground. Thanks! Do you have pics?

Figure even if you are only making one horsepower per cubic inch @ 310CID. that is a lot of loss.

i would like to see any antique tractor motor that makes anywhere close to 1 hp per cubic inch. at 20% over rpm i don"t see it happening.
i'm sure someone will tell me i'm wrong though.
