Got a question for you pullers. I have an Oliver 880 set up for pulling. It has cast wheels with pressed steel 38 inch rims and new tires. I am in the 5500 to 6500 class due to the cast wheels. I load up with weights to the 6500 lbs. limit. I have had the tractor for two years and have had great success.

Here is what the previous owner told me via e-mail:

"The tractor doesnt just have an 880 motor, the whole tractor is an 880 in super 88 sheetmetal and thats the way it was when we bought it. The 880 is a heavier tractor and thats why it wont make the 4500 pound class. I was pulling early last season and broke a pinion gear in the rear end and we went all through the rear end so everything there is in good condition or new. The only thing we did was to increase the pressure on the injectors and we had the rpm's set up to around 3000 and it was always really strong and reliable."

I have had good success in the 5500-6500 lb class for the last two years, until today. In past pulls I have always lost traction before losing power. Today I powered out before breaking traction. As a result, I got beat by a JD 60 in top running condition, and a Farmall H with tow sets of wheel weights and in top running condition. Not a good day for me.

I am now wondering if there is anything I should be looking at to cause the loss of power? Pump showing wear, injectors showing wear, tire pressure incorrect (7 pounds on a very hot day), too much weight?? I just dont know. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The engine sounds good, starts easy and responds to throttle quickly.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

if the tractor has always done good and this is the first time that has happened then I wouldn't look at anything until at least 1 or 2 more pulls. Could have been that the track was just biting really good that day or you were just having a bad day. We have a Super M that rarely chokes at all up through 6500-7000 but every now and then it will.

Good example, first pull we went to this year I was 15-40 ft behind the folks I normally pull close to,next week on a different track and sled That same tractor took a 2nd and 3rd and was within 5ft of those same folks in all the classes.

Now if it continues to choke down I would definatly look into it but if everything seems to be running as before pull a few more times and see
