The pull-back tractor on Tractor Pull Sleds is usually a large one - do the sleds pull harder when going backwards?

A 2500 lber can pull ours forward but it really takes about 60 HP and 8,000 lb to pull it back comfortably. Not that it is any heavier backwards but the hitch point is MUCH higher. A lighter tractor will just spin. It is nice to have a heavy tractor with good brakes also.

A sled doesn't really pull any harder going backwards. More HP lets you get back to the starting line faster. Biggest need for a larger tractor is to get things whoaed up. You have a lot of rolling mass that isn't stuck to the ground when you are going backwards. Most of our pull back tractors are provided by dealers and they always want to send the biggest horse to a dog and pony show.

our second sled is a pull back sled it takes about 80 to 100 hp to pull it back due to the pan dragging back with sled. the hp is not all it needs,. its a heavy tractor(8000# or more-- front wheel drive sure helps on smaller tractors ) so you don"t have to spin the wheels on the tractor to move the sled back. this keeps from working the track up more than whats needed. they aren"t hard to move its other things that make the difference like track conditions ect. most people just like bigger tractors so they don"t have any problems. hope this gives an idea of what we have to think about on pull back tractors. thank John
