John Deere G Knocking

I am putting a 51 G together .It has a F550r block and a F486R flathead and new aluminum gas pistons. new wrist pins and tight connecting rodsHead redone. I took it for a road run .Did'nt get very far it knocks under slight load .What is wrong????? What am i missing?? It has 165-170 psi . Have I made it to tight with to much comprestion????

I would say that Its probably only hitting on 2 cylinders!

I have to agree, its most likely a detonation problem(spark knock). is it just under a load, or is it at idle too? get some 94, or if there's a race track near by, get some 110 torco or something, we run 110 in pretty much all our stuff, but 100 octane aviation gas works too as two-cylinder noted, got a relative that has a very strong B that runs av. gas. look around and play with the timing a lil and post back and let us know what happens.

I have the same setup in my 51 G as you describe, it does the same thing unless I run an aviation gas or high octane racing gas. Without hearing it run, I would agree with the other posts that your not using a high enough octane gas.

Check that the flywheel is tight and proper side play.

you really didn't think a G with 10 to 1 commpression would run on regular did you try some 114 octain or 118 if you can get it.Paul
