Does anyone use a JD 80 for tractor pulling? Im getting ready to buy one. What are some things I can do to the 80 to gain a few more horsepower that wont cost a bundle?

Make certain it isn't a real early 80 with the R connecting rods. They tend to bust under high torque/thrust. The blackdash 820/830/840/720/730 used 13mm injection pumps. The 70/80/820 greendash used the 10mm pumps. The late 820,830 and 840 used larger six port injector tips. I can't recall for certain if they were 12 thou and the six port 720/730 tips were 10 thou. The black dashes used a better head without injector inserts. The pistons were the keystone design. If she doesn't stall out. Spend you time working on traction and balance.

Opening the rack screw is about all you can do on a budget. Also check and clean the entire air cleaner/intake system. You would be surprised how many hp are hiding amongst all the years of built up crud restricting airflow. With a good motor, clean air system and full rack, you should see about 80 hp.

An 80 makes a good puller. Ours pulls better in heavy classes. We can"t seem to make it hook up too well under 12000 lbs. It would be different on a tacky clay track.

If you want a quick and cheap increase in power you can open the rack up some more. Other than that you are looking at boring block and replacing with 830 pistons and 830 head. With this setup you can then run the bigger and beter 830 injectors.

you don't need any more power outta those old 80's. just let'er hunker down and git dirty. they are some fun tractors to watch and to pull.
