I'm looking to up the compression a bit on my A. The tractor has a powerblock and a cyclone A head on her now with a heisler manifold, however I don't think even shaving this head down enough will up the compression to the range I want. Now before everyone starts hollaring heisler (which seems to be like hens teeth) but an option, what other options are there? Will a early A flat head bolt on? What about a Jerry's head?
Thanks in advance.

I've used a Jerry's for several years. You'll probably lose some low end torque, but overall your power will increase. Murphy's Motor service handles them now. You could also have some high compression pistons custom made. An unstyled A head will NOT bolt on. When you say you have a "cyclone "head, do you mean an early styled (A2325R) or a late A (A3376R or A4226R)? A late head will have approx. 6 cu in less than the early head. Mike

Mike, was wondering, would a head from a 60 work on a long hood A. I have a 46 A that I have to do something for a head. I know the 60 head would require a 60 manifold and carb, but would it provide increased compression and still fit on the block studs? How does the late A head increase comp, I have looked at my 2325 head and it appears the valve surface is resesses the same as the late A heads are. Curious what the difference is. Thanks

The 60 head will bolt on without any problems, other than the possibility that the studs might be a little long. I've had a 60 head on a '41 with a power block, don't remember what studs were in it. If you compare a late A or 60 head to the 2325 head side by side you'll see that the combustion chamber is 1/4" deeper on the 2325 head. They are shaped the same, but there is a difference. If you're planning to still use the oil bath air cleaner, remember that you need the 2 pieces that go in front of the carb and split around the fanshaft for the air intake. Good luck, Mike
