JD G flathead F486R

I have some questions for putting a flat head (F486R) on a styled G. First, which intake and exhaust valves will go with this head (JD parts number)? Second, do I need to use pushrods that went with the original flathead (unstyled tractor) or can I use the pushrods that are in my styled G tractor (has the F551R head). Third question, can I turn out more thread on my head studs from the F551R head or do I have to use shorter studs to bolt the head on my tractor? Final question, what kind of head gasket should I use with the flat head? Any input will be appreciated.

I would find good aftermarket studs the originals are soft, they stretch and head gaskets fail

The problem I have had with the aftermarket studs. is that they are skinny.... and do not hold the head in place very well.. and the threads are a rolled on.. not cut.. My studs didn't get tight in the block... Theses were not aftermarket studs.. but studs I had made by an aftermarket fasner company... Someone was working with ARP to make studs.. but I never heard a final if it actually happened... If so.. that would be the best route.. if they are built correctly...

I don't have the part numbers for the valves.. (not with me..) You'll have to cut down a set of push rods.. They all use the same pushrod. (The block is longer on the unstyled Tractors, head is longer on the sytled tractors.)Either cut the middle out.. or cut one end down and reround the end.. or weld a ball bearing on the end.. Never tried turning more threads on the later studs.. I guess it would work.. just don't turn down the side that threads into the block.. they are a little different thread. I've used thick washers.. the best is to find the unstyled Studs. We have had good luck with the John Deere Head Gaskets on the G's. Only other think you may run into is a little flexing of the head on the top side of the combustion chamber.. common problem on a stock flathead with high compression... Good Luck,

jdpullin&jdnut- I found if you put a short 3/8 bolt & lock a nut at the top of the comp.chamber in the water jacket works real well. I blew a head gasket (2 times) till we figured that out. No problems since. Also copper/cote your head gasket real good and let it set overnite. I also put fishing line around both sides of the head gasket to stop the seeping. Good luck luckydog

One other question on the pushrods. What length does the pushrods have to be shortened to? Thanks.

I don't remember the exact amount.. 3/4 to 1in.. I think I just started cutting them down a little at a time until I got it where I wanted.. Get a wood dowl.. and cut it to length.. then cut your rods to match... JDGnut

Thanks for the input. Could you possibly find the intake and exhaust valves part numbers for me? Two people have told me two different sets of valves. The one person told me to use F578R(Intake) and the F577R(Exhaust). Another person told me to use the F51R(Intake) and the F531R or F1031R (both Exhaust) valves. Thanks.
