I have a MH44 that i bored to 4 5/16 and shaved the head 300 thousand. The compression is about 200 a cyclinder. I still have the stock carb and manifold on it. Was wondering what i should do for a cam,valves,etc. Any ideas would be helpful or if there is someone i can talk too.

Murphy's Motor Service in MO has a set of 1.95/1 rocker arms for about $400.00 that will give you alot more lift. Kind of an easy cam job. really works well though.
What is your stroke?

My stroke is still stock. I might stroke it sometime but right now i'm just going to play with the cam, carb, and manifold.

I used pistons that I had laying around. They were out of a stock 427 flathead continental. The piston has a small dome on one side that i made fit up into the head to give me extra compression. It runs really well. i usually pull 3rd gear in 4500 with 15x5x38. The sleeves were made to fit.

As far as a carb, I would try a big-bowl Marvel schebler off of a 65 gas. It's easier to tune, in my opinion, and I picked up 6 hp. on my stock 44, and it runs a lot better than with the Zenith. And, I've found that my relatively stock 44 pulls better with a muffler vs. a straight pipe. I lost the sound, but it had a noticeable increase in torque. Might be different with a modified engine, though. Mine is stock bore and stroke, pertroincs ignition, head milled .075. That's about it. (I'm not shy at all about my setup)

you can pick up hp. at 540 pto rpm and still not pull as far as a smaller venturi.

I can understand how the smaller venturi would speed up the airflow into the manifold, thereby drawing more air in through the carburetor inlet, and filling the combustion chamber faster, and with more volume. This would most likely result in an increase in torque. My trouble is that I can't seem to get it to run correctly with the original Zenith carb. I've tried rebuilding it, and extensive tuning. But, the 44 just seems to run better, and be less temperamental with the Marvel Schebler. Besides, the muffler helps with the torque, and the only time I ran one at a pull, she pulled the best she ever did. Thanks for the info, and I look forward to seeing you at Callao in April. Barring any natural disasters, I should be there. I have the truck and trailer all ready to go. This weekend I'm going to give the 44 a tune-up and oil change.

I have a 44 with M&W 4 1/8 pistons, shaved head 0.090 and a Case 530 carb that runs well in Div II. The Case carb is about 1/8" larger in the throat so I had manifold drilled to match. I think mine runs better with muffler as well.
