Hello,I've pulled my stock M for a couple years and I want more power.I tried to talk to people at DENNY,S CARB SHOP and I will not deal there anymore,I want to go with 4 1/8 pistons for 306 cubes, can I shave the head?and will this help how much can I shave? What about the valves, rack, carb and governor? I think I have the ignition pretty well I have converted to 12 volt electronic ign. with ACCEL plug wires and autolite plugs, with a 55,000 volt coil,Where can I buy performance parts, besides denny's?THANKS Craig

Find a 5-3/4 stroke crankshaft, with the 4-1/8th bore pistons, that makes 307ci. www.thetractorshop.com ChadS

Sometimes, you can get lucky and you can take off .125 and still be thick enough to still farm with it. Rule is,, the head plate has to be no thinner than .300 thick. Measure at the water ports and whatever is beyond .300 you can remove,,, sometimes you can take .100 sometimes its only .010!! So measure carefully. Keep the valve train stock, new parts are the best in this case,,, Best,,, is to totally rebuild the head,,, valves, guides, springs,, keepers etc etc,,, Your not running 2500 rpms and stiffer springs can possibly bend the push rods or the spring itself can be too thick,,, and collaspes the spring before the cam finishes the cycle. If you dont want to stroke the crank, you can have the block bored to fit 450 sleeves in and that will take you out to 281. M rods and 450 pistons will allow you to offset the wrist pin location on the rods, and give you more compression, and more low end torque. Sm-450 cam, and use what ever head you wish. Ive seen them with 8060 heads making 70+ hp at 540 a 450 head will get more, shave it, port it and pick up more,,, so theres lots of options. Using a 4.125 bore. ChadS

Now how does that work? If you have a super m engine and put 450 pistons in it with m rods the wrist pins are a different size with the super m & 450 pistons but the pistons and sleeves are the same size right? What would you do change bushings in the M rods to make it work .I just overhauled my smta and put the super m kit in I can only get 58 HP out of it LP manifold ,recurve kit ,rejetted carb ,it wont hang in there like those 450s on low end with 18-4-38s I guess maybe I should have used the 450 pistons instead . But if I can gain more I can always change it again.
