Anyone put water in their tires for pulling?

My "WD" is 130 lbs. under weight and its hard to find 65lb weights. I refuse to use calcium, and I don't move the tractor in the winter but will water act the same as a wheel weight?

Remember the 7000 series Allis tractors from the 70's all used 65lbs. suitcase weights. It would look nice on your WD with the casted A-C logos on them. Their not that rare I have gathered about a hundred in the last three years.

I tried loaded tires on my 460U and had lots of trouble with chattering at the rear tires under heavy loads. I switched from water in the tires to hang on weights and it fixed it.

I've been using windshield washing fluid it works great not as heavy as calcium but cheaper and it doesn't hurt the rims

Thanks for all the info, I do have 40lb suit case weights but I pull about 3 places a year that will only allow wheel weights. I start off pulling 3500lb class and I'd like to be about 20lbs under that cuz most places allow 20lbs over.

The same tractor will weight different on every set of scales. External weight is easy to remove if someone has zeroed the scales a little heavy.

You could also put antifreeze in with the water. I always heard that fluid in the tires was better than weights as it puts the weight directly on the tread, but ain't sure if there is truth in that. There was a discussion on one of these boards about it a couple months ago. But the flat steeel isn't a bad idea either, especially if you only want/need 130lbs, as that is not much water at all, as water weighs 8lbs a gallon.

A friend of mine pulls both styled and unstyled JD G's. His opinion is that the unstyled really like the weight on the wheels (fluid or wheel weights) were as the styled G's benefit more from having the weight behind the wheels. I personally I don't have the experience to comment either way but I found it interesting either way. Food for thought

One of the big pulls I hit is the end of august (upper 80s w/humidity) I love watching boys lug a ton of wieghts between classes while I'm sitting on the tailgate of my truck enjoying a beverage or two while my calcium pumps weights my tractor.

I really can't comment either way either. I've only pulled my two super C's (bone stock, literally off the farm) in one local pull last summer. On the farm, all the tractors have fluid in the tires except for one of the super C's, but they don't need it as all we do is rake hay with them and pull wagons mostly. Intrestingly, the two C's, one weighing in 60lbs. heavier (had fast hitch but no water in tires, the other one just a drawbar and water in tires) the lighter one w/the water out pulled the other by 1". That's the one in dier need of a rebuild, smokes pretty good. Lots of fun though, especially since I pulled one right after the other, and another one of my friends was pulling a super c too. Hopefully after a engine rebuild here in the next couple months, we'll be able to see if it pulls any better!

You could cut some weights from plate steel. 1/2" steel plate weighs 20lbs/sq.ft, 3/4" is 30lbs/sq.ft.

I have done what Augie suggested plus a little. I took 3 different thicknesses of plate steel and then laid a 100 lb. weight and a 78 lb. weight on each sheet. Marked them with chaulk and cut out with a plasma cutter in the size of my suitcase weights. I also took a 78 lb. weight and cut the bottom back corner off with a chop saw. Then all you have to do is weight them on your wife's bathroom scale someday when she isn't home and mark the weight on each one with a paint marker. Worked good for me.-- deadeye
