IH 460 Pulling Project (C-291)

I have a C-291 and would like to know about swapping it into a 460 chassis.

Will the 460 timing cover swap onto the C-291? The C-291 has been ground down on the left side to fit it in the rails from a previous owner. This could be a weak link in time if not right away.

Any bore or piston combination that will work better than others? Sleeveless?

Any other pros or cons to this engine in a 460?

Everything will swap right out as far as parts are concerned. If someone bored a sleeveles block to the 291 specs, thats great! If its sleeved, 2 options, Keep it a 291 and rebuild it as often as needed, or bore it to the 301, no sleeves, but then you have a sleeve flange groove in the top of the block left over. Dont know what they would have ground off it, so thats a judgement call on that area. With the 291 sleeves and pistons,,, I look at it like this,,, its rebuildable,,,, if you ever wear out the block bore,,,, your boring the block,,, Chad

It is a C-291 (no bore out) and I agree, it's rebuildable.

How does the 291 compare to the 301's? What makes the best H.P. for the buck on these motors? I don't plan to do any stroking, just looking to have a little fun without mortgaging the farm.

I don't know why, but they ground back the front left casting that acts as the motor mount to the frame. It is ground between the upper and lower bolt holes and the top one was ground back.

Now I need to find a front cover. Thanks.

Give it a simple rebuild, port the head (gasket match) the exhaust ports along with the manifold, valves ground, etc, etc. Thats a good baseline. Probably not much to miss between the difference in the 291 and the 301,,, Head work is the key,, very restricted,,, thats where the focus should be if the short block is in good shape. Chad
