I am having some trouble sealing the head on an unstyled A.The studs are original And I'm thinking that they are stretching for me. anyway my question is are the new $20 items from JD any better than the originals I think the newer A studs are hardened and am wondering about the replacements for the older ones .Or should I have new ones made somewhere ,and if so where?

any help appreciated Thnaks Paul

It is normal to have to Re-Torque the head more than once, and then, it HAS to be heated up to absolutely FULL saturated Temperature...so the head studs are HOT, and expanded.. Oil the threads, and use a "Running" torque, with the nut moving to overcome friction...

If you have not over-torqued them a lot, the studs should be good..

The unstyled "A" head has several places the head surface will flex. You need to correct that and then I would "O" ring the block & head at different dia. That will give you a double seal. The head studs are rolled thread & fit tight in the block. It will be hard to find a stud to replace them. Maybe some one has a source. But make sure the block end of the thread is snug fit. Tighten stud all the way down snug. Then back off about 5 deg. That will keep them nice & straight and not cocked over due to too tight in the block. If you "O" ring try to keep your wire protrusion to .005 - .006. on the metal face stock gasket. If Copper gasket go by what the gasket man suggest. It depends on the thickness of the copper & how (annealed) soft it is. The head can be reinforced in the weak spots. Earl
