I was talking today to a guy and he told me that if I used a set of high compression aluminum pistons in a styled G with the flat head the motor would not lug very well. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any input either way would be helpful.

The vital point of compression ratio and detonation has been raised. Any spark ignition engine engine knocking or detonating will loose power and pound it's self into pieces. Due to the shock waves over loading engine components with too much pressure.

If you are going to run the flat head, I would have the head pinned for support. The machine shop will add a bolt in the combustion chamber area, so when running high compression it won't crack like stated in another post.(They drill and tap a 1/2 inch bolt hole, run a bolt through till it bottoms out inside water jacket, then machine it smooth.)

i also pull a G similar to two cylinder's, and it has ~72hp, .090 and a flat head. it lugs and runs real well, and am very happy with it for no more then whats done to it. around here, theres SEVERAL like ours that were done back in the 80's and STILL run today.

The 5" or flat head has more advantages over the ramp type than just raising compression ratio...it also breathes better. If you run this head with an M&W style piston however you're c.r. will be in excess of 13:1, way to high to produce any low end torque. I learned not to do this years ago when I set up a G this way and proceeded to split a 486R head wide open while running it on the dyno. I ran a '46 GM years ago with an unported 5" head, big nut carb, gas manifold and .045 over M&W's with .375 milled off the top. The tractor dynoed 56HP at 535 PTO RPM. It was the most successful tractor I ever pulled and won lots of trophys. Still lots of torque but I had to run 100+ octane gas in it.

I have the setup your asking about. High Compression Aluminum Pistons .090 over, Flat Head, baffles removed from the gas manifold and oil bath removed in favor of a K & N type air filter. It will not run with the stroker tractors, but it is pretty competitive in the 3-4 mph classes of 5500-7000#, but gets out muscled in the 5 mph classes. On the dyno it make 68-70 hp, and needs aviation fuel or racing gas to make any power.

Put it on.. You'll be happy with it.. Its no stroker.. but it will run good.. Throw in some high octane, and go.... There are a few little things that will have to be modified; push rods, if you don't have the carb spacer you can just shorten the throttle linkage.. and if you are still using the oil bath air cleaner the elbow will be a little short..
If you could get the same compression with the styled head, you might like it a little better.. Good Luck,

JD G nut, Can you be more specific on modifying the pushrods and shortening the throttle linkage if I dont have a spacer. Thanks

Because the head is 3/4in shorter than the styled head, you will need to shorten the pushrods.. different ways to do this.. cut the middle out.. cut one end off and reround it.. or even cut one end off, and weld a ball bearing on the end.. I've always just cut one end off, and reround it it.. (but next time I might try the ball bearing trick.) The throttle linkage needs to be shortened too.. you might be able get the change with just the adjustment... (but I had to cut mine down a little.)

Everyone's going to have their opinion on this.. I've seen tractors with .375 shaved off the pistons w/flathead, get stomped on.. and seen one with shorten rods that runs really good almost everytime.. And most of the flatheads in our area run fairly good.. And most of the head are not Pinned.. (but I do think its a good Idea..)

G Puller,

My buddy had eexperienced this. He had a G with M&W High comp pistons. He decided to put a flat head on it, it then had too much compression. It wouldnt run very well and he lost HP, even on 110 racing fuel.

If I were you, I would go .90 over with flat top pistons and the flat head OR .125 over w/ high comp pistons and the cyclone head and have the head shaved!
Hope this helps!

sorry to tell you, but you had to do something wrong with it. have a flat head G with some .090 and some port work that has ran 68hp since 1986, and has only had a valve job and rings and port clean up since..and STILL will run 68 ALL day long.(only did rings and valves due to us leavin water in it and cracking the head)
