how come at all the antique tractor pulls I've been to in my life, I have never seen one tractor that had wheels on the wheelie bars. most garden tractors have them, but i've never seen and antique with 'em.
perhaps somebody can enlighten me? been wonderin' fer days, and can't think of a reason.

if you haven't noticed, most tractors pull in dirt. wheel's don't roll good in dirt when they are being forced down by tractor. a skid plate will have a "sliding" effect. plus wheels have smaller contact patch and would dig into dirt and not support tractor.

I have seen some steel rollers on some. Most rules call for a 25 sq in pad some say a 5 x 10 that is the same sq in but I have seen a lot of other stuff too. Ken B

Because unless you use a pretty wide wheel it will dig down instead of holding the tractor up if the front end lifts. The skid plate won't do that unless the track is really soft or the front of the plates aren't angled right and cause them to dig in.

I wasn't real sure if mine were right or not until this year in Tunica when I rode my wheelie bars about 50-70 ft. Heheh dang it was fun... :)

The plate has more contact area tha a wheel does.
