Anyone know of where to get plans to build a belt driven dyno? I think it is called a prony brake or parker fan or something to that nature.

Prony brakes and Baker fans are two totally different devices. The one at Rollag is good for 230hp max. Koellers 1030 Case maxed it out out at the 06 expo!!

I have seen a set up that bolted to the front of an M&W dyno that was a belt pulley on one end and a 540 pto shaft on the other. It had a frame work that held it solid to the dyno and the dyno pto shaft slid right up to it. I don't know if that's what you're looking for but it was kind of neat.

I visited with a guy up in Rollag, MN at the big steam threshers reunion this past September about a pony brake. It all is pretty simple once you just kind of think about it. Measure the amount of foot pounds and doing a calculation to convert the amount of foot pounds produced to find the horsepower. Basically a flywheel, a contraption to put resistance on it and bars off of it that attach to a load sensor so you can measure the rotational resistance that you can apply and remove from the pto or belt spinning the flywheel. With steam engines you can just put the screws to the max on the resistance and stop it from spinning. Back the resistance off the flywheel and a steam engine can stop it from a dead stop. Pretty impressive. Shoot me an email and I can send you a couple pics.

They're called Baker fans, aren't they? That sticks in my head for some reason. Googling that might turn something up.
