I'm new to tractor pulling and I'm getting ready to buy a set of 12.4x38 firestones for my 45 John Deere A. My problem is that I've found the tires I'm looking at in 4, 6, and 8 ply, all being very comparable in price. What would be the best "ply" rating for tractor pulling with my stock 2 banger.

As a rule a higher ply tire will allow less flexing than a lower ply tire, assuming the air pressure is the same. And do not succumb to the notion that flexing is good. If the sidewall flexes, not only do you lose hitch height (like Drew said) but you also lose ground contact pressure at the center of the tread which will cause the bars to lay back and cause you to lose traction. A lighter tire can be made harder with higher air pressure. The higher ply tires are just more forgiving if they are run at a lower pressure. If your sidewalls flex, you are already behind the game. unlike the person who thinks stiffer is better, the side wall ply rating has nothing to do with how stiff the lug is.

A higher number ply as in 8 means a stiffer sidwall than 4 ply. It has alot to do with the weight class you are going to in. a 4 or 6 will be enough. you want the tire to "flex" when under a load. a stiff sidewall will let you spin instead of grabbing. watch other in your weight class to see what I am trying to explain

And when a soft sidewall flexes, you lose hitch height. A stiffer sidewall will let you run a little less air to get the footprint flat w/o wadding up the sidewalls and thus dropping the hitch down.

Old, hard tires are better than brand new ones.

My opinion....The stiffer the better. With new tires the bars roll back on a hard pull. The stiffer the tire the less roll back.
