i looked at the old ih grain truck my uncle has,it says on the cab A170 series. it looks like a 301. the vavle cover is smaller like you said the truck head would be.the only thing that looks differnet is the water pump,the one on the truck looks bigger and has a hose going from the radiator to the middle of the head .is this the rite head?

The valve cover is about 2 inches narrower than the tractor style,,, Same length though,,, where the coil would normally bolt onto (on the tractors) the bolt holes for the coil brackets are not there on the truck head, Pull the valve cover off,, if the valves sit vertical, straight up and down instead of at a slanted angle,,, will have shorter rocker arms, and the thermostat housing is smaller in size.
