To be honest,they are great tractors to work for hobby and other small jobs but on the track they are usually too fast in first gear.Try it as light as you can get it,even try pressed steel wheels to lighten her up.I worked on one that has oversized pistons(high comp),cold gas manifold and 136 psi per cylinder,it runs well and will pull the front end easily bare tractor but start hanging weights on it and the fast first gear will become evident.You can put the reduction gear from a late A in it and slow first down a little.If you don't mind a little work pull the crank and add some stroke,there is a bunch out there running mild strokers(if rules allow).

Not sure the year, but there is a slant dash A in our area that pulls 5500 and up to 7500. This A is stock other then bore and I know this to be a fact. That old A has won a lot in 5500 to 6500. In this area the 5500 is kind of between division 2 and 3 and has 18 to 30 tractors in the class at any given pull. There are 88's - MH44's - MH55 - JD.G's - JD-A's - Cockshutt 40's and M's, and all are very tough. I pull this class with one of my tractors and I'm here to tell you that little A is tough and is right there with any of us. It will just hang right there and crawl past you. Example, one night most of the class was 275 to 285, 6 of us was between 291 and 296 and that A walked up and putt it,s last putt at 297-6. Maybe it's just a fluke that it pulls so good and that's the only A that I know is stock and pulls like that. Now there is one other A that I know of but it sounds more like a Yamaha or Suzuki then JD. So It would'nt be fair to judge what it can do as compaired to stock, even if the owner says it's stock, ok right, but won't go there ( LOL ).

Unless pulling in a sandbox with a sled that has a looooo ooooo ooong chain, it wont even spin out in 5500lbs. It would take some tweaking to even make 40hp. Its going to take something other than a bone stock engine to spin the low gear you are working with w/o making the tractor a lot lighter.

As you can see by now,if you aren't talking modified on here,you won't get the time of day. It will probably out pull another brand with 40 hp if that's what you are asking.Tune it right and weight it right and drive it right and it will probably out pull a bone stock M which is an equal to it hp wise. Notice how all the other brands,the engine weight is all to the front and on yours it's half way back or farther. Everything else being equal (stock)(no weights)we all know which will pull better.Simple physics,engine turns the same way as tires,low rpm/high torque and weight ballance to the rear.
