i'm looking at boreing out my JD A for pulling and was wondering how much i could go before weakening the water jacket too much. This is an early styled A that is a hand start but i'm not worried about starting it as long as i have a chain and a vehicle around. thanks in advance! DF

For aircraft pistons:
Chester Roberts Supply
Collinsville, TX (DFW metroplex area I believe)
903-429-6805 or 903-429-6656

I have a 5.75 bore which is .250 over with a 9inch stroke. The thing I like about .250 is a set of 5.75 inch airplane pistons are easy to find and you can resleeve it easy enough.I have known some people to go a little bigger but had heck of a time trying to get it to seal.

Dairy Farmer I pull an unstyled A that is bored to 5.875 which is .375 over stock. Pulled it for 8 years and still going. 8.375 stroke and 9.5:1 compression and hand crank it. Lynn

5.875 will depend on your block... some will hold some won"t... depends on the casting.. and how rusted the water jacket is.. You can use the 70 pistons with a stroke or longer rods.. Many just stick with 5.75... Good Luck..

For a 5.75" bore Alan Schooler uses a Pratt + Whitney aircraft piston, but you need to have a different rod made becouse the pin height is different on the aircraft pistons. Good Luck JDMark

Mark, does Alan Schooler do ANY work, or does he just farm it out and mark it up?

The ones I have seen are 2.705 CD and 1.372 wrist pin.

If you are going to use airplane pistons, get the pistons and measure them before you bore the block. They have a lot of clearence built on them and you may want to adjust final bore size accordingly.
