Probably doesn't really have a 450 head, but that's okay. Take out the hot gas because that won't help. Put in 89 octane with some lead additive. Check your timing, you've probably have that advanced past 30 degree's. Bet it start's reall good !
Have a buddy watch you pull and see how much smoke is coming out of the blow-by pipe, make sure it's dark not grey or white !
Autolite plug #87, need a hot plug!
Drop the carb, and put the smallest venturi in you can find, (m)
Tighten up the intake/exhaust manifold, also reset valves to factory specs..
On a good day you should be close to sixty horse !
Any water or white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe ?
Either the motor is extremely tired, or a bunch of small things !
Get rid of that govenor spring and put a stock one back in, readjust govenor by the manual !
Should be a good tractor to pull div-1 without alot of money spent !
Adjust points, file and clean up, set plugs at 18thds !
Throw away the coil if in doubt, make sure the motor has good ground, check gas cap for ventulation, (breath)

That's all I got, good luck !
Just my opinion, need to pay attention !

Maybe recheck the head bolt torque too. Surefire way to tell if its out of whack, is when the valves were set the first time, they would be now loose, and some tight cause the head may not be sitting flat due to the gasket not compressed enough. That could be the difference in 55hp and solid 60's. If the rocker arm tips have grooves in them,, have them ground smooth, you just cant get the valve lash set when they are shot and grooved where the rocker meets the valve. check the rocker arm and the shaft for play, bout all of them have a bushing and have not been replaced since new. I did that to dad's super m, also resurfaced the tips of the rockers, picked up 3 more hp.

Theres something wrong. My M has 4in firecraters w/ a low compression all fuel head and a carburator build out of pieces. Last fall I put it on the dyno and it had 48hp. Oh did I mention that #2 cylinder had a broken oil ring

How much HP you want? You can find a 450 head. Then you can mill it and put big valves in it. That will get you close to 60 HP. Then find a good pulling card. Then put a cold air manifold on it.

big valves, great for big motors and hi-rpm, won't work on the back-end of track with stock cubes and needing low-end torque !

it has a 450 block head pistons and on the dyno it puts out 51 hp with the carb jet drilled out and the stem holes at the bottum the same as the jet got lots of fuel but seems to need more air

It sounds like you went too far! Try to adjust your high speed jet in to you get rid of all your smoke on a Dyno and adjust your distrubitor, You should have 60 HP without Aney modifacitions if the engine has been rebuilt in recent years

How much compression does it have?, and what weight are you pulling it at? Stock hitch, or modified? Tires size? Chad

With a setup like that, it would be better at 4500-5000 lb classes. No doubt in my mind its short on power, with the hitch setup, it will require more torque to accomidate what the frame can now pick up and carry. Some other things to do, would be to move the hook point farther back to take some of leverage out of the frame, that may help a lower HP engine live a little longer on the track, that and making it lighter and move down in weight classes if they allow you to do so. You may try to drop the hitch height down,,, that can help let the engine live longer. A setup like that,(18 inches from center of rear axle, 20 inch high) even in low gear with the 15.5's, 65-75hp may have trouble on a good track. Been there done that, but with a Super H instead of a M. Just not enough motor for the setup. Hope this helps,,, till you tear into it. ChadS
