methanol is an agricultural by product that use of would increase corn sells . methanol has a lower btu rating than 110 so you burn twice as much . but aa 1.60 a gallon its still cheaper than 110. unless the engine is 15:1 on compression it really doesnt make any more power .engine temps do run cooler and sometimes that can increase power but if everyone runs it ten the playing field is level . im tired of paying 5.00 to 10.00 dollars a gallon for 110 gas. any thoughts and maybe someone will listen and lift the bans.

I will never understand why some people want to take a good sport and turn it into something we can't afford to do, or to make difficult for those that can barely afford to pull stock. Just a thought. Keep alcohol out all togehter "all kinds."

nitro is miexd at a pecentage with methanol .typically atrue reading is at 68 degrees in temp. and decreases as temp goes up.typicaly 100 percent nitro at 90 degrees temp will show 94 percent by volume. and according to my friends who use nitro 100 percent nitro will double the horsepower output over gas or methanol. but that you have to really keep the engine rich and usually rebuild it after every pass.also at 40.00 a gallon doesnt make it cheaper to run .also it is easier to detect exotic mixtures in methanol cause when mixed with water it usually turns the mixture red in color.

yeah a catylist like toulene. i agree that nitro is very dangerous for exploding engines but im not talking about using nitro by percentage .but was talking about methanol even though i got cofussed on what it was made from. i will also agree that if the motor has 15:1 compression and a fuel delevery syaytem capable of 14psi that it will make more power than gas. but in antique tractors with carbs that the floats want handle more than 2 psi there will be no significant increase in performance

In my opinion you are wrong. Just do not believe antique tractor pulling is ready for alcohol as a fuel. Too dangerous. We find it volatile enough in the form it is used now at pulls (LOL) but we don't get people hurt. Talk about putting an end to a lot of fun just have one of those detonations, get a bunch of people hurt or worse, and you wouldn't be able to get insurance to have a pull. Let's just have fun doing what we already barely can afford. If you have the money there are places you can go do this. Just my opinion.

methanol is wood alchohol so it wont help sell any more corn. ethanol is corn liquor or white lightning.alcohol burns with an almost invisible flame especially when out in sunlight so there is some aditional risk. Paul

Ethanol is made from corn, methanol is made from wood, not corn. And then you can have a problem when someone that doesnt know what they are doing tries to run it. Alcohol engines are very touchy to weather conditions, and it would be only a matter of time before someone ran one way lean and detonates one.

Methanol makes 20% more hp. than gasoline. It burns cleaner and cooler than gas. I have ran methanol in open rpm antiques and in my super stock tractor for the past 15years. I hear people talk about how dangerous it is becase you can't see it burn, but as with gas, if it is used responisibly you will not have any problems. Methanol also mixes well with nitrometane :). Where you are wrong is it being cheaper. It does cost less per gallon, but it takes twice as much methanol to make the same power as gas. That is the reason you have to double the jets in a carb to get it ot run on methanol. Hope this helpd Fuel the debate. Oh, nitro also mixes with gas by using a cataylist. :)

There is a ton of info about Ethonal on www.e85fuel.com I includes techinacal information, FAQ, and so on. I am not saying it is 'right' for antique tractor pulling, but there are a lot of 'myths' about it.

Below are two FAQs for the website.

Is E85 more toxic or dangerous than gasoline?

Response:

No. 100% ethanol can be and is ingested by human beings. The fuel ethanol must be "denatured" with gasoline or a bitter agent to prevent ingestion. Also, ethanol does not contain the harmful carcinogens and toxins found in gasoline. If E85 is spilled on the ground, can it contaminate ground water?

Response:

Ethanol is water soluble, non-toxic and biodegradable. E85 contains roughly 80% less of the potential contaminants found in gasoline.
