I am 16 years old have been pulling tractors for a little while. I what to start winning instead of losing! My dad has a 1937 JD A that he gave me, but i don't know what to do to it. Have talked to other local people and they won't tell me what I can do. I want to stay around or just over factory rpm's, speed around 3-4 mph, pull 4,500 to 5,500lbs classes.
Can this be stroked alittle? Do i need a heisler head or a power block? What needs to be done to cam, anything done with reduction gears, and transmission gears, manifold and intake and exhaust ports. One guy that i pull against has a unstyled A and he runs close to stock rpm,s, and rpms don't seem to drop, he aways wins and spins out.
Please e-mail at above address. I need all the help i can get.

Thank you

Chad

I would not go any more than 9.0 inches in a 37 A. The clearace at the top is very close and requires a little bit of grinding. You have to remember that a 37 A came with a 6.5 inches of Stroke. You might want to find your self a styled A crank Because they were 6.75 inches and don't take as much welding.

i am 16 also.... if u have the high-low transmission trade the reduction gears for the ones in the 49 and higher"A"s it will give you alot of drawbar horse and well thats is what we all want also make sure your clutch is not slipping.... if u have alot of money to spend cut the head of the block one hundred thousandths and u will have a gread tractor.... thanks alex

I wouldn't bother finding a heisler if you are going to keep the stock unstyled block. If you decide to drop in a power block, you have to switch to a styled (cyclone) head, and then I would step up to a styled heisler. First things first, a reground cam will wake the tractor up quite a bit, as well as make it lug far better than it did before. As for stroking, it'll cost you about the same whether you add a little or a lot, so you might as well make it worth your while, I wouldn't go any less than 9"
