I was wondering if on a stock tractor more RPM creates more HP or just ground speed? Been reading through the pulling fourm trying to figure out the setup for a Farmall M? Thanks Terry

A stock carb, manifold, ports and valves will only support a set amount of rpm. You have to get more air/fuel in AND out to get more rpm.THEN you will get more power. Also be aware that when you increase the rpm (power) you exceed the limits, eventually,of the relatively weak valve springs, pushrods etc. Flywheels, clutches etc are only made to be safe at lower rpm. Excessive centrifugal force on these and things can get ugly in a hurry. Especially when they are 40-50 some years old and possibly cracked or have stress risers.Spin these old motors up around a crowd and someone will eventually get hurt. There are ways to make more HP and more importantly TORQUE,at the stock rpm. These engines are far from 100% volumetric efficiency.Work on bettering that instead of making a grenade out of it.

basically an engine is an air pump the more air that you can pump the more air fuel to burn will make more power. if the torque curve stays flat or if the torque does not decline when rpm increases horse power will increase but many factors limit rpm carburetor size valve size cam profile as well as combustion chamber shape spark advance and fuel type can all limit rpm increase. thus limiting power.Paul

Depends on the volumetric efficiency which affects the torque curve. HP= torque x rpm / 5252

Thanks for the information. It does sound like an engine rebuild and a better head is the way to go. Some tractors seem to be at a higher RPM but I would hate to see something break and hurt somebody. Terry
