I would like to prep a 1945 John Deere A for pulling Division III. It's been a while since I pulled, and when I pulled I pulled another color(s), but always collected Deere. What's allowed and whats best bang for the buck, stroke, bore, carb and electrical (it has a mag now). The tractor isn't running and it will need to be gone through anyways so I'll be spending money for a bore job, head work and other essential parts (bearings, gaskets etc). Thanks.

Looks like Div III excludes Jerry's (stock appearing head and block) and I don't think his stuff was in the parts book. I can still stroke it, just overboare to what the stock block allows and flow the head with cam work and a carb that fits the stock flange..... ..... .thanks.

You can run Jerry's stuff in D-III. It appears stock and is a replacement part available to the general public.

There are better options out there than the JWMS head anyway.

Interesting note about the head and block. You mentioned better, what are you referring to?

The best choice for a head is a Heisler. The runners in the JWMS head are huge and low end torque suffers as a result. You can work on them and make them better, it just costs $$.

I agree, the Jerry's head for the styled A is more or less junk. His heads for Gs are alright, and can be used on motors not much larger than stock all the way up to 900+ cube monsters. The ones for unstyleds flow alright, and I've seen them in use quite succesfully on tractors that were anywheres from low 500s to mid 600s for cubes, but the ones for the styled A are just too big. You have absolutely no low end torque, and they idle horrible with them too. Spend the money and buy a Heisler.

I would go at least a 9 3/8" stroke, probably use a jerrys head and manifold, get good cam, and start from there, get a hold of Keith Merfeld in Iowa, he does good work and the price is good. He does the work, some other shops take your job and send it out, he can do it all and you"ll be happy, there are other places , but he did a nice job on my A.
