I finally got my "M" with a 440 chrysler running late Friday night, spent most of Saturday fine tuning things, (didn't get to do a "practice" hook at home though" and went to a pull Sunday. Tractor and I weighted 4800#. To make a long ugly 2 hook story shorter, I never checked/had reason to open the steering column gear box (right in front of radiator near the top). The castle nut that holds the steering column/front wheels on had come lose (cotter key wasn't installed) and when the front end came up, the tires never left the ground. Luckly, I wasn't going very fast when the front end went up and I took an immediate left turn to the out of bounds line. All the was hurt was my pride.

I think it took longer to jack the tractor up this mornign to "check it out" than it did to actually fix it.

Dave , I would be interested in talking with you on what all you had to do to get that combination together. I have a MM M602-LP with a stuck engine and a 440 Irrigation engine (was on nat.gas) and have been dreaming a little. You can contact me at [email protected]. By the way I saw a narrow front end come off a JD Super Stocker one time. They were pulling in a rodeo arena and he was nearly to the end of the track. When the front wheel assembly went under the rear wheel he came loose from the sled and hit the chutes at the side of the end of the arena. A six inch pipe took the left rear wheel off and the tractor fell on it's side. The puller spent the night in the hospital and when he rebuilt the tractor it had a wide frontend on it. Also the next year they had a dedicated pulling track in Whitewright, Texas.
Thanks
Bryce
