Have gotten a lot of good advise from you i the past. Also printed your info on IH carbs. I am trying to get just a few more horses out of my SMTA to handle a swather. I put a heavier spring in the governor, used the lightweight chevy advance springs in the distributor, electronic ignition, and advanced timing. The problem I have now is it "surges" under load. It will pullup to full throttle, then drop back. If I open the main jet screw clear up it seems to get worse. Read your posts about drilling out the main jet and the metering stem with same size drill and wondering if that would help. any suggestions? Do I have too stiff a spring in governor?

If its a 2 weight governor, you might try grinding off some of the weights, that would let you run a higher rpm, and lose the surge. The heavy weights are trying to fight the spring tension, see saw battle back and forth,,, lighter weights will cure it, you then could set the high rpm governor setting with the long bolt. A lean condition can cause it to surge too,,, it takes a small drink,,,, accelerates, then drops off cause it ran out of fuel. Find the drill bit that fits your stock jet, and go 5 sizes larger bit,, use the same bit to drill the bottom 2 holes in the metering stem. It should be able to run rich at full throttle, if not, go 2 more bit sizes on the main jet only. Make sure the Idle passages are clear,,, Chad

Thanks for the rapid response. I had printed off posts where you discussed drilling out main jet and metering stem, also you mentioned that if you can open main screw all the way up and engine won't get too much fuel then you need to drill out jet. I think I could remove the high rpm adjusting screw from my carb and it wouldn't over fuel at all. How much does the regular sediment bowl filter restrict fuel? I am wondering about switching to a valve and inline filter anddoing away with the sediment bowl.

Its lean for sure,,,,, ,,, You could drill out the inlet for the sediment bowl, drill out the fittings that the line hooks up to,, that will help gravity fed systems a little more reach the carb bowl. You could also drill the float valve a tad,, but it will leak if its overflowing, or to big of hole drilled to seat the needle. With the carb bowl off, float removed, with the line hooked up tothe carb, turn on the sediment bowl, fuel should run pretty fast out the needle seat, if it dont, check for obstructions, and the vented cap onthe gas tank.
