I was wondering if any one ever pulled back in the days before the mechanical sled came along. In and around Lawrence, KS where I grew up on Dad's farm we used to pull at the county fairs using a flat piece of sheet metal and people for weight. As the sled was pulled down the track people would step on. Depending on the weight class a tractor would be added to sled for additional weight. Anyone ever pull this way else where? By the way Dad's old 1952 MM ZA was hard to beat back in those days.

Barryton Michigan - My dad has told me about guys lined up along the track and would hop on as the sled went by. I guess the crowd of spectators would start OOHHHing when a couple of the big ol farm boys would step on the sled. It went along the way side in the late 60's when my Grandpa and a group of other farmers built a transfer sled. That same sled still works and up until a couple of years ago we still used it every year for the Barryton Days homecoming celebration.

Here in SW MO I started pulling back in 1967 and we used a walk on sled until the start of the 1971 season.I made my first hook ever in the 9000 lb class on Dads 1967 MM M-670 Super diesel and pulled a whopping 44' as I didnt have the drawbar high enough.

If I didnt take a tractor to a pull I would always ride on the sled.There was a 5 mph pace tractor for safety reasons.

In 1971 our pulling group got a mechanical sled and thats when the horsepower race took off.

At the antique pulls we still used walk on sleds in to the mid-
late 1980's.

Those were the good old days.

Hey Gary we took Jimmie's W-9 over to Chillhowee Mo. a while back and there sled broke so we used one of these sleds. Diana had just been telling us how she had always wanted to do this. So she got to live out her childhood dream. We had a real good time and homemade icecream. It just don't get any better than that now. Jim

We pulled a step on until 1987 when the owners built a transfer sled. Never had a problem getting volunteers as it kept the crowd involved. For the heavier classes they would park a light tractor on the front of the platform. That was in the days when a tractor with M&W pistons was really souped up! Some of my most enjoyable days of pulling, every body started at the same point and improved to match the other guys. Many of my advances were learned because of lack of funds or purely accidently! ie, worn tires outpulling new ones!

the kentucky/tennessee threshersmens show in adams tn still pulls the lower weight classes this way on their friday night schedule
i have pulled both tractors this way and its a lot of fun

the show this year is on july 14 & 15

I am glad others have pulled that way, they never heard of it here in West TX. I am surprised it is still being used. I would like to see us do it here, would be less costly than the mechanical. But as Chances R. said insurance could be a factor. I remeber we always had to sign a waiver in KS.

Yes used to pull that way up in michigan with a WD-45 back in the 50's and early 60's, was lot of fun tom

Here i am in 1973 with my 1918 Aultman Taylor 30-60. Our fairgrounds still has the sled but they dont use it any more. I thought I was told that insurance had a problem with them using it. Charlie

Yes as a kid i remenber going to Groton South Dakota to a tractor pull and that how they did it as the sled went by your bale you hoped on Worked good until the tractor speed started to get faster then there was trouble.

The steam show at Republic, Mo. still pulls that way for their antique pull, 1938 and older tractors. Show is the middle part of September.

At the Pontiac threshermen reunion they still use a big plate to pull the members tractors.
