governor on SMTA

Yesterday I was pulling the old girl really hard, using a 12 foot hydroswing swather in heavy hay. The engine run up to full throttle then drop back, like a surging. The governor seemed to be doing it's thing but not holding it at the higher throttle. I have a heavier spring in the governor and have adjusted it per the book. I also turned the rpms up to about 2000. I have lighter springs in the distributor and electronic ignition and have advanced the timing a bit. The rain cap is black so I think I am getting enough fuel. Any suggestions I need a couple more horses I think?

Hayfarmer, How much heaver is your governor spring? The problem with a heavy spring is you can get the rpm's but the governor is numb. The lightest spring that will hold your rpm's will give you proper governor action. You may only be opening up carb 1/4 open to achieve 2000 rpm's.
and this is all the governor has to work with on your strong governor spring. If you can find a M&W or Rocket governor they work much better than stock. Your stock governor is probably worn out. Hope this helps
