KN air filter/msd box gains?

Just wondering if K&N air filter really gets much of gain? Just wondering becuase this winter im going through my JD 60, going bigger pistons and intensive head work, stock stroke though. Is an air filter like that really that less restrictive than a oil bath?
Also, a MSD box? Does it replace anything or is it more less just an extra thing to enhance spark? What kind of gains will on see with a msd box?
My 60 has a power block, will have 6-1/8" bore, intensive head work, cam grind, carb from a 70, exhuast pipe built on a dyno(with dent), dennys dist, dennys hot coil, let me know if im overlooking some stuff for more power, i will be pulling from 7500-unl with road worn 18.4 38's.
With what i listed im almost at rock bottom of my budget and still digging, so please no recomending a 9-1/4" crank. Thanks

Kevin

MSD boxes do help. The have the spark plug fire multiple times instead of just once. This ensures that all the fuel in the cylinder is burned. As far as peoples complaints with Pertronix, I've seen more guys just try to put a conversion kit in the most worn out piece of junk distributors and think the dont work. Best bet, get on to pertronix's website and download their industrial catalogue. You'll be suprised at how many tractors they have complete, new distributors for. And, they only cost about twenty bucks more than the conversion kit alone.

I have had enough problems with the electronic ignition. been through 2 sets of pertronics in 2 years with not that many hooks on them Went back to the hot mag. Still tough to beat. My opinion...

The MSD with multiple spark may help as a two cylinders with high compression shroud/cover/bury the sparkplug with the side of the piston. Idealy the sparkplug should between the center of the combustion chamber and the exhaust valve. No difference in the 60 and 70 carb as far as airflow. If you look through the Robert's Carb parts book you will see a whack of different jets & offices. Depended on the cubic inches and fuel type. If running 10% alcohol then going to 70 all-fuel calibration maybe an idea. The straighter the airflow entering the carb the better. The oilbaths were good for thier day but for pulling & K&N or Amsoil oiled mesh aircleaner is supperior. I would not run a K&N or Amsoil oiled mesh in the field or on a highway vehicle. As for building a 60 vs.70 for pulling in the 6000lb or higher classes? The 70 would have been the way to go.

A friend pulls a john deere a and he claimed 3 hp on the dyno by just indexing the spark plugs.

On a stock 60, I saw 3hp by just taking the oil cup off the aircleaner. If the rules allow, I would ditch everything foward of the carburetor and make a tube intake with PVC pipe. You have to play with it on the dyno to get the lengths right, as every engine has a different length that it will like. Then you can put your K&N filters on the tubes. Roller rocker arms gained 4hp. Look for a LP or M&W manifold setup instead of the stock gas manifold. Where are you getting a cam from?

I havent dynoed w/ and w/o MSD, but the tractor will start a lot easier with the MSD box, and they are only $150-$175, not $500. You need the MSD 6A. Hate to break it to you, but I think your Denny's parts wont help you, but you did get a neat sticker on the parts though.

Hey Drew, any chance you can dyno with MSD and then with a Mag? I was thinking the MSD was about $200 and then you spent another couple hundred on distributor, etc...

When I get done switching blocks/heads/etc again the tractor will be out for a couple dyno hits and if I think of it I too would be curious to see what kind of numbers the MSD makes.

There is really nothing too special in the distrubutor. Most people put the electronic ing system in to get rid of the points, but other than that, its stock. On mine, I do have an additional module to change the timing 15* from the drivers seat, but that is purely optional.

Neither item will make enough differance to be noticed on the dyno with 397 c.i. MSD does have some merit in motors over 9.5-1 compression, but I wouldn't spend the money on it just to say you have it, as is the case with alot of these accessorys on pulling tractors. As for the air filter, the stock one should do just fine, but again the K&N setup is less restrictive and you may consider one as someday you stick some more cubes in the 60.

My opinion - I took the oil bath off mine just for weight. No dyno runs before or after. Unlikely that it matters. MSD seems to be a great way to spend $500 all at once. I can't complain about the mag if you do it right.

You are running 7500# and up, I wouldn't waste my time messing with the air filter. You're probably in 1st gear, you won't need any more power...

Where are you pulling at? Tug pull or transfer?

A 6A MSd and a new set of points will help anything incuding a lawnmower! I have had bad luck with those chep pertronix units. If you want an electronic ignition in an oliver, your best bet is to use a V6 chevy dist.
