Hey Guys & Gals; A buddy of mine has two Cockshutt Brand 1953 tractors that he uses for local tractor pulls!. This coming Saturday he will be doing his second local pull this summer and asked me the following question, and I told him I was ask my friends here for some advice or help of any sort!.

How can the large old tractor tires be made softer for better traction on asphalt?. These are almost stock tractors, but he still spin's the tires at the end of the pull, any extra traction would help!. He lost a 1st place pull 2 weeks ago by only 16", bummer!.

He know's you can buy expensive race car type compounds that you paint on. BUT, it is to expensive for his 5-8 times a year use. Does anyone have any idea's of something that could be used to soften these large old tires?. THANKS ALL!!...

Some folks swear by ordinary chlorine fabric bleach? The shorter the tread bars the better on asphalt

apply heavy grease, let it sit for two weeks.

Pure mess, but it will tear up the rubber !

I have heard that WD40 will do the trick. Don't know how much but some of my GoCart budies have used it successfully. Don't know why anyone wants to pull on pavement.

Worn tires that are sharp on the front edges are best. Tire pressure is a biggie also.

One way to verify tire pressure is to look into the whole when you pull out. If the hole is rounded like a spoon you have too much tire pressure. You want the edges of the hole to be flat, square.

you want your tires hard. the probem may be air pressure or he may have too tall of lugs making a pile of dirt infront of the sled or they cut in too deep i wouldnt waste money on tire compound . get a hand held electric wood plane and shorten the lugs or get some well road wore tires

VHT makes tire softner that is used on drag tires and they also make softner for sprint car tires too. Look thru Jegs of any dirt track racing mag. You should be able to find what you want.
