M Preparation for Welding Axle Hubs?

Hey Guys,

I have a set of hubs on the way from Dave Brugger for my M and hope to install them next weekend. Right now I have both axle seals leaking so I was going to replace them. After some thought, I am wondering if the seals or bearings can be replaced again after welding on the hubs? I dont have it apart yet, and I am trying to prepare for next weekend. Do you guys think I should get another set of bearings for good measure, or can I replace them with the hubs welded on?

Be a good idea to replace seals if they are real bad.Once you weld those hubs on will be tough job to them.When you cut your axels off to weld you hubs on wrap your seals and bearings with a towel soaked in water to disperse some of the heat..Weld them on with low hydrogen rods or super missle rods..These will leave the temper in the axels..Have welded on three sets like this..Last set with gussets very close to seals.Not had any problems..Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies guys. I will do the wet towel trick. I have the new seals on the way. The outer bearings look to be in good shape so I think I will leave them be.

You cannot replace the outer bearings after the hubs are welded on.

I'd replace them now. They can be replaced later but you'll have to pull the whole axle housing off the tractor.
