Setting up my Puller...tires etc...??

Hey guys,

I am looking for some advice on the tires for my M Puller. The engine is turbocharged and will put out ~200 HP once I get all the bugs worked out. Possibly more depending on how much boost it handles. I would love to be able to use a slipper, pull in road gear, and keep the tires churning, but I think that is a pipe dream so 4th is the next choice. The problem is that I really feel it is way too low for what I am wanting to do. I would like to be able to eventually run close to the V8 boys, but I need more speed.

I have a set of 15.5 road worn tires on 16 inch wheels right now. I was planning to cut them and see how they worked. I am beginning to think an 18.4 might be better because of the speed/foot print increase.

Basically, I am wondering if you guys can offer some advice on whether to stick with the 15.5 or go up. Obviously, I could just see what happens, but I hate to spent untold hours cutting the tires to have them not hook well. If someone could offer some advice on the best way to cut them I would greatly appreciate it. I am the first guy in a new local open class and I dont have anyone to bounce these ideas off of.

Thanks for reading my ramblings....

Chris

Hmmm.....wonder what year and how to know the difference. There is one for sale I know of that I might could trade for, but I dont know what tranny it has. Any idea if it is a direct bolt in change? Would the tractor have to be split, or could the existing case be used?

Thanks on that. I did not realize those existed....kindof new to this :).

i dont know if id call it a boltin. your best bet is to find a ol m with one already in it, the 9 sp's will bring as much money as you might be able to pick one up for. best to find a running m to make sure the rearend is good, ive found one with trans problems in the past(check the teeth in the trans if its not running, through inspection hole or top trans plate is best)there one not running on ebay right now for 700 with no bid on it, dont know where your from but i think its in IL.ive seen 9sp's just parts bring 700+.....btw youd rather have the lever m&w over the cable heister better engaugement less chance of it ever haveing teeth knocked out....g/l

Thanks for the information. I am going to have to keep my eyes open and maybe go check on one that I know of locally. I want to get to pulling and not spend a ton more money right now, so I will have to probably hold off for a little while, but thanks again for the info.

Save your time with cutting the 15.5 and buy a nice set of cut 18.4 38, 200+horse should handle em trouble free.

Yeah, I know it would handle them no problem. What I am wondering is if higher tire speed with a smaller tire would be better than a wider tire. Just an idea....

If you have the power you think you have 4th gear with with 18.4x38 should be able to spin plenty fast. We could run 18.4x38 with I'm guessing less power than that in super M 4th gear up to about 6500lbs, then need to shift down to 3rd from there up to 8500. That was before we added the turbo to our 540CI IH 361 block.

When we added the turbo we can now run the equivalent of 4th gear super M gears to 8500, and last summer we pulled a 12000 open class in 3rd without any problem. I'm guessing we're well over your 200HP mark, but have no idea for sure. Your problem will be keeping 4th gear from breaking when you get those big tires hooked up and all that power out front. Lots of ways to help it - e-mail me if you're looking for rear-end ideas. We changed the ring and pinion to a faster set-up so that we can use regular M gears in it - easier to find replacements:) Not sure what the ring and pinion is out of though... You'll also need to consider your clutch set-up - starting out in 4th gear at 8500 is hard to do on some sleds.
