does anything ever come out right the first time? got the m put together and it put out 210# cold. go to start it for the first time and all i can get out of it is two to three slow revolutions of the engine before bat (new 800 cca) will only spin it one time and needs charged. i have new battery cables (i did buy cheaper 3/8" copper... should be big enough) new foot starter switch and everything is hooked up with good contact. now i have read in the archives that a stock starter had no problems turning over a 298ci m with 265# and i have problems spinning 281 at only 210# what gives? the only thing i can think is that the foot starter switch wont let enough current through or the wires are not heavy enough? has anyone ever had/fixed this problem before? i was also eyeing up the starter on the 460 diesel. do they turn the same direction and have same number of teeth and same profile? would it work? i was also thinking of running 18 or 24 volts or a parallel 12 v setup but im afraid i will fry that little starter.

finally get it started (thanks to a hill) set the total timing to a conservative 10 degree, warmed up, drove around a little and put on the dyno to break it in. pulled it down to 35 and noticed the exhaust is clear as water. turned main load screw out and no real difference. now this carb had been worked over before when the m was at 160# and at 6 turns you wouldnt have any bug problems and now turned all the way out its not enough? oh well if its burning all the fuel i can throw at it right now should make lots more power when i get it right. i just didnt think 50# and an msd box would make that much difference. i am running 93 in it and i didnt hear any pinging when it was runnig but it did diesel a little when i shut it off so i pulled the plugs and 1 and 4 are white and 2 and 3 have the slightest tinge of brown... close but no cigar. when i get the fuel flowing i am hoping 93 will be sufficient as regular pump gas prices make me cringe not to mention 112.

if anyone has any suggestions for starters, timing, carb mods or any other suggestion to get this thing roughed in so i dont have so much guess and test, i would appreciate it. thanks

Mine runs around 230-240 and I'm still running the creaky old stock starter. The battery needs to be hot to spin it, but it will. I have some problems keeping a good connection at the starter post at times but a fully charged battery usually does the trick.

Sounds like you need to enlarge the load jet a smidge if you can't make it smoke any. What kind of hp is it making?

mine is 210 the starter works it just fine after the rings and bearing are broke in . kicks out about 75 hp. works fine on 93 octane no knock at 25 degrees at 1600 rpm. shut throttle and no dieseling.

We had the same problem with a RD motor in a 460. Thinking we were around 230 to 250 psi cranking WOT. Had to buy a starter from Lemons (reduction gear). It worked for a while but got to the point it wouldn"t stay engaged. Finally set the starter up on 24v with the old diesel starter and it whips it fast enough that in only turns over a second or two before it starts. The main battery energizes the solanoid (spelling?) and the 24v only goes to the starter.

IMHO you should be able to richen the carb up so you can adjust for cool days or hot days. Sounds like it dieseled because it got to hot from running a little lean. Lean is mean but it can hurt the pocket book.
