M Clutch and Flywheel options

Hey All,

Some of you have seen be asking dumb questions around here about my Turbo M endeavor and here comes another one.

I am planning to up the RPM a bit on the engine and I am wondering about the flywheel and clutch options. I am wondering what the highest safe RPM is for a factory flywheel, and what other options are available. I can get a ceramic clutch disk and have the pressure plate beefed up locally which should hold together fairly well. But, I dont know what to think about the flywheel issue.

I am thinking I will run a blanket and possibly connect the frame to the diff. so if something happens it doesn't fold up on me.

What are you other guys running high RPM on various antiques doing?

Stock flywheel,, Wouldnt turn it much past 2300, Id have a blanket on it even at that rpm. They are a heavy piece of Iron! There are persons making custom flywheels to do whatever you choose and not break the bank. I got a 460 that turns 3000 max,, with a stock flywheel. It will have a blanket on it for sure. Its got 6 bolts VS 4, whether that has any more strength, I dont know. Think safety, go custom, that turbo may like that better with a lighter flywheel. Chad

Thanks for the input, Chad. I will prolly set the rev limiter to 2000-2200 to start with just to work the bugs out. I will prolly upgrade the cam, springs and flywheel at the same time in the future if I stick with an M engine.

How many R's you think I can turn if I make those upgrades, but stickwith the cast pistons and unbalanced bottom end?

Have the rods reconditioned. New bolts if you can find them. Locktite them as well as use the bendable locks in the rod bolts. I talked to a fellow about balncing the entire crank and flywheel,,, he said its very difficult, but its possible. I could see it running 2500rpm if you really pay attention to the rods. Run a custom flywheel if you can, and use a scatter blanket for sure. Im not in love with revving up these M's like this, without taking proper precautions. Your dealing with 50+year old parts that can possibly fail at any given time or place. You should be able to make some real good power at 2000 rpm with a turbo, Ougtta be good for 10hp at least even at 540 pto speed on the dyno. Chad
