Hey all,

I have a little project that I am about to start and I would love some input from you guys. I am totally new to pulling, but completely experienced in gasoline engine mods. I am going to try to apply some of my car experience to a tractor since there is a new local class starting up with the antique pullers.

I am planning on running a blow through turbo setup to start. I already have a custom EFI/Turbo engine under by belt so this is gravy. What I need to know is how well the M will hold up in stock fashion, and what problems I might run into. Please let me know if the plan has major flaws.

I am planning on either mechanically limiting timing or switching to an MSD BTM for tunable boost spark control. I will likely be eliminating the governor and going with a Holley carb and soft touch rev limiting on the ignition instead. I will be running low boost and race fuel initially untill I see how it works out. The next plan is to move up boost and add water injection for detonation control.

I guess what I need to know is how well you guys think a stock M long block will hold up, and where I need to limit the RPM. There is a local guy doing this with alcohol and spinning about 5kRPM at 30psi of boost. However, his engine is balanced with light automotive pistons and rods. What I am hoping is that I can run about 2.5-3k RPM and get it to hang together a little while till I can get another long block together.....sortof a bomb tuning block so to speak;).

Lemme know what you guys think...

I have a modified turbo tractor that I run in our Hot farm class. But, our club requires us to run our governor, stock throttle linkage, and a 3500 rpm limit. My manifold is stock. I mounted the turbo and wastegate to the pipe threaded into the top of the manifold. I converted the tractor from gas to propane. Propane works great for a blow through application. The carb is set up for a pressurized system (no blow by at the throttle shaft and no floats to crush under boost or building a pressure box). Fuel enrichment under boost is solved by a balance tube from the boost pipe to the propane converter/regulator. If you have rpm restrictions, the key is to find the right exhaust housing small enough to create boost at lower rpms.

Not sure what happened to my other reply....

Ian,

What kind of mods did you do to the internals of your engine. I am very curious on what it takes to make the engine turn 3500 RPM comfortably. That would just make my day if you are running factory internals :D.

I am planning to ditch the govenor for now. I guess a scatter blanket would be a good idea around the bell housing. I am planning to put a little cage if things start getting fast. There are a bunch of guys in the V8 class with cages and bracing so if the tractor breaks in half or scatters a diff. or trans. it will not come and get them. It is well worth a couple days work to stay safe.

If your friend is running a cast flywheel he might want to read my post on excessive rpm's and clutch/flywheel explosions!
