Im looking for a set of 20.8 38 firestone superall traction f&r. Some say I should run radials. Others have told me with alot of wheel speed the radials will make the tractor hop. Anyone have any good advise?

I ran a set of Michelin Radials on my 900 Case (turbocharged 6250 hot farm class). The tires would work very well on certain track and they would hop on other tracks (regardless of air pressures). I switched to a bias ply Firestone and have had no complaints since. My vote is for the bias ply.

A friend of mine ran 20.8-38 Firestone radials on a 1466 for several years, always ran at least 20psi, never had any problems with hopping. He was running 4th low ta and 3rd high ta. The only thing bad about it was everyone else always complained about him running radials. They were brand new tires that he had 1/2 the tread cut off of. That might of had something to do with it.

Without knowing what kind of pulling your doing, I would say the radials will hop with speed. We have a set of radials in the barn if you want to try them. We pull a 1066, 3,000 rpm, 400+ hp, Hi 3rd in the 10,500" class.

4020 was running 18.4 bias firestones with 5/8 chevron cut. 10,500 3000 rpms it would spin out in road gear. Class changed to 20.8 uncut tires i know I will have to drop a gear for the bigger tires. Kinda leary of what radials will do.

Radials are actually better at higher wheel speeds than at lower ones. However, they are very sensitive to air pressure. Many times the "hop" is due to too low air pressure. The tire tries to hook up then "squats". This makes your drawbar height lower, you lose weight transfer and this makes the tires come "unhooked". This process is repeated over and over until a pattern starts, causing "hop". This same thing happens to a lower speed tractor but instead of creating a "hop" situation you usually just stop moving. Normally you run radials at very near "field" pressure" or even above. They work very well if you realize their "quirks". Mike

We had up to 28# psi in our tires and they still had the hop. Took them off put on bias and no hop at 20# psi.
