I've read about 250 of the 500 posts on msd boxes thanks to all you guys. What a got from it was that to use the points instead of the electronic igntion cause it would be cheaper and that the electronic ignitions can get fried and all they do is trigger the msd boxes anyway. I was wonderin how long the boxes last and if you thought it might be ok to get a used one, or just get a new one. Also what coil would be best for it. I was thinking about the msd blaster2. please give any info and correct me if i understood something wrong.
thank you

If you use points, don't use the condensor.

Point contacts work just fine to operate MSD. The coil output no longer passes thru the point contacts so no points to burn up. Just make sure the mechanical advance in the distributor is working, it can throw the MSD off and cause a pop thru the exhaust, or the intake. Bout any coil is good from here on out with MSD,, I like Accel super stock coils, Ive had MSD coils go out before, never had trouble with accel. Once the MSD system is installed, throw out the book specs on the plug gaps, you can open em up to .050 minimum and have a nice flame to the electrode. the electronic conversion dont amplify the coil out put when MSD is used, so there is no better setup as far as the trigger is concenerd. The MSD uses all the coil"s potential power, just like a electronic conversion does,, but instead of 1 fire from the electronic, or points you get 3 to 5 sparks at once to give the cyl alot better and more complete burn in the chamber. 6AL are great to start with, then go from there. Hope this helps, ChadS

If your points/dist are in PERFECT condition, you probably won't see much differance. Mine were 50+ years old with lots of hours on them, I saw a marked differance in performance. I am not useing a MSD box, just a hot coil with plugs gaped at .045.

Its not the large diameter coil it looks like a regualr 12 volt coil, chrome, or yellow. I think its the 42, Chad
