If a man was wanting to spend $2000 to $3000 on an A JD what would be the smartest way to spend the money to get the most horsepower. Also how much horsepower will that much money get you. I realize that with low first gear you really dont need no more power but I just want to make it tougher.

I have done that 2000 to 3000 $$ trip on an A, it ran well, but honestly , if you have that to spend, go get an super 88 oliver and spend your money there, you will be happy with the results and you will have a hard time getting the smile off your face, ps , I love deeres, just too much $$ for the power and longivity you get from them.

The best use of your $2000-$3000 would be a stroker crankshaft. That will get you the most torque and horsepower for your money. And depending on your bore size your probably looking at 65-70 horsepower with a 9 1/4" crank, and more is possible with a powerblock.

I agree that a stroker is a good way to go. I added a few numbers up in my head and killed $3500 real quick though.....and that was with cheap rods and pistons. Putting together a stoker short block is only half the cost. All the other stuff you need to go with it adds up pretty quick. All the displacement in the world doenst do squat if you dont have an induction system to complement it.

for 3,000 you could get a decent 88 of the right green, and about 50 to 60 hp.

Guys thanks for the info. Dont get me wrong, I like them Olivers and that is what all my buddies pull, but I am not a trader and the only real color green is JD green. I am not saying that sometime in the future I wont own one of those imitation green tractors but for now I want to get the A thumpin loud. Any other info will be greatly appreciated!

What will it cost to stroke a crank and buy new rods?
