Ok guys. So I bit the bullet and got engaged. Now, I have to make my purchases while I still have my money. I remember some listings for recast 450LP heads. Kinda looking to go that route. Also looking at doing a nice stroke on the bottom end. Gotta be dependable. What have been some common strokes that have been successful long term? What rods are being used? What about pistons? I just want to make sure I spend my money wisely. Not sure when I may have it to spend again.

If your only engaged and your already trying to hide stuff, maybe you need to step back and take a long hard look at things. There are girls out there who love pulling just as much as you do. Finding a pulling girl is the hard part. Took me years to find my pulling girl. The first 2 wives cost more to get rid of than what several good pulling tractors would cost.

Well, she is a pretty good gal. It was our third date, and I asked her to go to a tractor pull with me. We left at 7:30 AM on a hot July day and went to Temple, Texas with super M. By mid day, it was 100 degrees under the one little tree that had shade near the track. She stuck it out, so I knew she'd be around for a while. Heck, she even plans on going wherever my job with CNH leads me. But, somehow she thinks this habbit is supposed to support itself. Somehow I have to convince her otherwise.

Gee Super Lerker ; you're a slow learner . Once through that was enough for me . If one wants a place to lay her head without license - maybe . That way when I've had enough ; out she goes . My X asked me if I'd remarry her . Huh , the first ordeal messed my life up enough . Not that desperate for used merchanise . Being single isn't so bad . Freedom ! ! God Bless , Ken

Yea, I know. Sometimes I think with the wrong head. Should have known with the 1st. one, and looked at things alittle different. Second one loved all motorsports until the "I DO's" were said, then it was the devil's work. Never saw anyone make a 180 turn so fast. Number 3 is as much of a gearhead as I am. Going on 10 years now, and getting better all the time.

I think if I were you and had a good clean 264 block I'd go with a 4.375 bore, 6.5 stroke, 400 gas head and have JE's, Ross, or Arias make me a set of zero deck pistons. Stock rods, bushed for the smaller pin size and big ends narrowed. You could be at a 100+ hp at stock rpm without breaking a sweat or the bank. Good luck on the engagement...

Flogger, how does the rod journal look after stroking a M-450 crank to 6.5? Any trouble with the oil feed hole to the rod journal with stock rods? Ive seen them grind thru at 6 inches with stock rods, just wondering what to expect. Im expecting to go thru,, hope its not too bad to not be fixed when it does. Im using a M crank, 450 block. Lighter weight crankshaft, might help turn the rpm little easier? ChadS

Yep it will cut into an oil passage at 6. What I've heard and plan to do next time is narrow the rod and the journal. Can't remember if it's a 1/4 or 1/2 off each side of the rod and bearing but it'll prevent grinding into the oil galley and helps the rod to cam clearance a bunch too. Countersunk rod bolts would probably help at 6.5 too.

We fix em at 6 inches when they go thru, I know over 6 inches of stroke, something else had to be done. Just too much to fix. The H,s arent too bad at 5-3/4 with stock rods, That can be fixed. Im debating,, I know what the H did when I took it out to 5-3/4, and that was a great engine for power, good torque. All Im thinking is,, if my H ran like that at 5-3/4, what would a M all tuned up right be like at 6-3/4. If the little brother ran so strong, I can imagine what the big brother can do with a simular design. Ive seen so many M cranks cut for H rods at 7in or what have ya, but have not seen a 6-3/4 crank with a stock rod. ChadS

They hit an oil passage on my crank at 6 inches too and it uses the standard journal size. They had to weld it up and "re-route" it deeper in the journal. I'm told 6 3/4 is about max for stock rods and I know of 1 or 2 running that arond here. Some of these guys are stroking Ms right out to about 8 inches so I've gotta figure they're moving the journal in on both sides to miss the oil passages. I'd sure love to see inside one of those big Baker or Lemmons moders...

Yeah, the stats are bout the same on the H's on how far you can stroke with stock rods. I dont think I would need over 6-3/4 for what I wanna do. All I can say bout looking at other engines is,, if they are making the cranks out of steel, they can shape them to any thing they need, In fact at 8 inches of stroke, Id rather have a crank casted for that, instead of a welded up cast crank that far. Just alot of material to move around in that situation. Im thinking with a M, if I can achive in that 120 hp range that would do bout anything I could ever ask of the tractor. I think I can get a 6-3/4 that strong, it would be a good one if it did. I bet it would be more than enough. If I get more power than that, Id be back to spinnin it out instead of pulling. Only running 15.5's at 10% rpm. The H did well, but has been phased out, so now its moving on to the M. Chad

You can build a good stroker without needing that LP$$$head. How much HP? Stroker cranks are probably cheaper than getting a reproduction head. The engine I plan to build for my M will be a 6.5 stroke, stock rods, 450 cam, 450 gas head. Should be in the 110-120 hp range. I dont know just yet if I can stretch it to 6-3/4 stroke on stock rods,,,, We can on the H's at 5-3/4, so maybe its possible to do the same on the M. Im looking to run 4000,4500,5000,5500 4-8mph type classes. Yeah, I can get a M down to 4000, shooting for 3750. bare, no driver. ChadS
