I'm building a 251 Chrysler. I wonder if anyone can tell me what maximum RPM this engine can stand and sustain.

i pull a super 101 i did every thing known to do to a 251 the biggest prolbem with getting rpms is getting enough air to the motor i ran a down draft maniflod and a carter one barrel you got to open the manifold way up lots of grinding and polishing as for the head i run a cast spitfire head its all about the CCs so take the head to a shop and have the find out the CCs of it and i run chevy small block valve springs it takes a little work to do it any guestions let me know

Years ago I used to pull a Wards ER with a 250 Chrysler. It had a 265 crank and was bored .125 with Jahns 10-1 pistons. It had an Isky 3/4 cam with heavy valve springs plus factory dual 1 bbl carbs and dual exhaust. We turned it 6000-6200 all the time.

I've seen some 101 MH pullers crank their little 230's up around 7000 rpms.

The cranks were the same in the autos as they were in the industrial engines, they just put heavy flywheels onthem for the power units and tractors. The 265 we have would run 5000 if it had the right flywheel balanced or built for the rpm. But if it still has the heavy cast flywheel, 3000-3500 max with a scatter blanket. Thats pushing it if the engine has not been freshened up. They are great engines, and make a 101 massey run pretty good! Chad

After a full balance job (clutch, flywheel, crank, rods, pistons, front pulley), I buzzed mine to 6000 with no trouble. Make sure you use heavy valve springs as you don"t want them floating and smacking the head. If you need a cam to get you there, I still have the one out of my old puller.

Just wondering what valve springs you would reccomend using? I"ve had my cam re-ground, cylinders bored, had .060 ground off head, added electronic ignition, homemade INT. and EXT. with dual up-draft carbs., port and pollished, and completely balanced engine

Do you think this will get me 6000 rpm???

Maybe. I think your cam specs will be a key factor to hitting your target. It sounds like you are on your way though with a good intake/exhaust. I hogged my intake ports out to get better flow and used a cam grind that was way bigger than I would have expected. The cam grinder said a flathead needs a lot of duration. I think my numbers were 310/320 @0.50 and .432 lift on 108 center line. At these numbers, it had to wind to 4000 just move out of its own way.

I used a heavy dual outer spring from a set of roller cam springs. Only use the outer spring as you don"t want 230# of pressure on the seat. And, make sure the coil bind limit of the spring has an extra .060 at the top of the lift.

If its rebuilt and balanced, 4500 is not a problem, except you will need some heavier valve springs, and a electronic ignition will help, ours will float stock springs at just under 4500, and ours is bone stock, and half worn out.
