Thinking about starting a v8 class in northeast IA any good ruels out there and how do you put these tractors together stock trans or do you use a auto trans thanks

hello
I put a 350 big block buick in a McCormick W-9 last year. I used both transmissions - i put the GM turbo 400 infront of the original IHC W9 transmission. I removed the tailhousing from the Auto trans and found a 4 bolt flange bearing to fit in place of it. I cut 11" off the GM auto trans to save room and machined a 3/8" keyway in it. then i took one of those "make your own sprocket" hubs to fit the shaft and key & welded a steel plate to it with holes drilled to match the 4 bolt hub on the original IH transmission input shaft. It worked out great, the auto transmission was like a powershift and i used the IHC W9 transmission for 5 different ranges. the torque this thing had was unreal, pulled awesome the first pull, the second pull the IHC transmission broke a top shaft but it was probably wore out anyway. We run a 430 Buick V8 in a Farmall M. We also run a stock transmission that bolts up to the V8. The key is machining an adapter plate to line up the bolt patterns. We also had an aluminum flywheel built in order to make it safer and less resistence on the motor when it is running. The tractor does seem to run well with the stock M transmission, but i have heard of some people using automotive transmissions as well. Most of the classes around here won't allow that. We are currently installing a 440 Chrysler V-8 in a M. What did you use for a clutch/pressure plate? Since the stock cast iron flywheel won't stand the RPM's, we had a steel flywheel machined. We still have alot of problems to figure out yet. What kind of HP are you anticipating? What gear will you pull in?

We got a clutch and pressure plate from a guy in Erie, PA. He slightly modified the springs on a 966 clutch. We have a machined aluminum flywheel as well. We actually are building up this winter a bit, but before we figured we were around 500 hp. Usually pulled in 3rd gear, somtimes lower depending on track conditions. We also pulled on Firestone 18.4 x 34.

What weight classes are you running? What CFM/brand of carb did you go with? Are you useing NOS? What RPM range do you pull at? What is you estimated ground speed? I have a set of 18.4X38 cut tires that I thought I would use. With a 750CFM carb, hi-rise manifold and mild cam we will have a estimated 425 hp.

There is a 3 tapered bolt coupler (on the in-put ahsft?) between the transmission and rear end that I'm concerned about. Did you replace it with something else? We hope to use a 11" button clutch plate. I don't think that we dare to pull the 6500-up weights without blowing up the drive train. Thanks!!
