Which has more power? Propane or Gasoline?

LPG?

I have a tractor that I am building for div. 3 and 4. It came out on propane and that is the way that I was planning to run it. My engine builder laughed at me for wanting to use the propane. He said that he helped with making conversion kits for Ford engines from gasoline to LPG, and that in tests LPG ALWAYS had less horsepower in the same engine than gasoline! I thought that LPG would be more? Am I wasting away my horsepower with propane?

Any way to "hide" funny fuels in the tank with the LPG?

If he was talking about a 372 ford industrial I'm sure it was pathetic on LP, THey only had like 7.2 or 7.6 to 1 comp. ratio. THey would burn any crappy fuel and not detonate. BTU's are less But there are major advantages to running it in a antique tractor, Starts easy, far from having detonation problems, Run carbs. that flow huge cfm#'s in comparison to there gas counterparts there fore feeding a big cubic inch instead of starving it for air, Bottom line, If you have a 1,000 cid and have to run a gas carb and airplane cabs are against the rules here you would be restricted to around 250 cfm, Where as a lp carb that flows 680 would be legal its a agricultural carb. Rules vary , and not every engine will respond to LP in a positive manor but moline's usually make more power on LP.

comparing a conversion kit for a ford engine is a poor comparison. LP likes compression and flow. A v8 conversion doesn't address that. If you bump the compression up to take advantage of LP it will make more than pump gas. It lugs to no end as well. This is because LP is a vapor mixing with air that doesn't seperate under low turbulance or intake speed. What does this mean? you can have a big, carb, intake and ports for big rpms and still have good fuel mixing for bottom end lug.

All things being equal, propane will have less power. LP gas has less btu or energy per gallon than gasoline. Raise the compression and a few other changes and LP will make equal or slightly more power on an equal displacement engine as gas. LP is high octane and will allow you to do things with the engine that regular gas will not.

LP will run at any angle.UP, DOWN or on it's Side. If the tractor bounce's it will not flutter or cut out. I have 3 of them, but only pull one of them and it does good, spins out does not loose power. JD 720LP Good Luck

Depends on what kind of engine you are building. Propane is simple and with a few things to keep in mind, it can really rock n' roll. Ask LW on this forum, he'll tell you. Other fellas will tell you it is antique fuel and junk, but M-M engines were made to run on it. No it is not ALWAYS less h.p. Looke for an old MM named "Solid Junk", one today called "Pro Pain" and the "Vista Cruizer". If you know what you are doing it is simple and powerful. Whatever floats your boat. I say go for it! I may do the same someday.

That"s the one. I just hear stories...never saw it. I"d like a picture and some more history.

IF I remember correctly, it was owned by Dave Stengel?? Saw him pull 3 times at the Harrisburg farm arena in the late 70's. Wasn't a JD or IH that could get near him. Pulled 12,000 open and I believe he was season point champ a few years in a row. Was a beautiful sight when he shut it down to unhook and had the flame show.

Thanks for your comments. I am going with the propane set up that I wanted originally. It is a Moline and this engine should like it! Thanks again!
