Have any of you had any trouble using a trailer breakaway switch and a msd.The way I understand the breakaway will ground out the coil. Will this damage the msd? Thanks for any advice

But if you use the 110 outlet you are not grounding anything you are simply interuppting the +,therefore not grounding anything hot just cutting the power.AND for the skeptics,I had third place at Columbia last year,2nd was 1" in front,@tech inspection his trailor switch failed my 110 did"nt.JMHO

I used a safety switch for a jet ski on mine. Just wire it into the switch so that when the clip is pulled out, it breaks the circuit so it's just like turning off the ignition. Since my fuel pump is wired into my switch it cuts it off too. Works like charm. About $15.00

If your running a distributor, I would recommend not using the trailer breakaway type switch, use the regular trailer plug or a 110 cord plug, you should really only use the breakaway with magnetos, my 2 cents

Why would this pose any danger to a distributor setup? All it does is the same thing as the switch when I turn it off. It breaks the circuit just like a plug would. That's why I used it instead of the breakaway switch for trailer brakes.

dont run the msd to ground, this could reek havoc on your ignition system, make up a kill switch using a small 4 prong trailer plug, a round metal one. make a loop on the "trailer" end , tying two poles together with the loop, then on the mounted plug receptacle, using the two poles that match up to the ones on the pull out (trailer) end, run two wires back to intercept the msd 12 volt feed, in other words, make a big loop so that when the plug is pushed in, it makes the circuit and when pulled out it cuts the 12 volts feeding the feed wire, ( heavy red wire) on the msd, this kills the whole ignition and no power is anywhere except at the battery, I also suggest hooking up your electronic fuel pump this way too, you can use the other 2 poles on the trailer plug, hope this helps.

If you are running an MSD with points, you can simply use a trailer break away and ground the white wire that runs from the dist to the MSD box. I have done quite a few this way with no problems. If you are running electronic ign., I would break the power circuit to the MSD. If you are using the larger MSD's 7AL thru 10, they have a kill wire on them that is designed to be grounded to kill the engine.
