Trophies. Money only screws things - and people- up. Besides, trophies last longer. Nice to show the kids and grandkids

1975, MY opinion is that trophies aren't just for showing to kids and grandkids, they should be given to kids and grandkids for winning. What do grown men want with a tropy?

I dont mind the fairs and farmshows to pay out, but I really think the clubs should not really do it. By paying out at clubs, you put friendships, buddies and alot of other things at risk, money changes people , some times too much, and some have more than others, so if you get beat by someone who has alot more $$ than yourself, the guys getting beat will usually fade away and they are also the guys who roll your track, announce your name, and give you a pat on the back once and a while, pay out and you will have to pay everyone to run your pulls, the scale people, the track crew, it just takes away from plain old fun, it also ruins the guy who just wants to see what the old horse will do anyway, as long as you have classes and stick by your rules, you will have fun, dont pay at clubs, save that for the big guns.

Our club pays back 50% of the entry fees to the top four pullers.

Is there any law in Mich stating you cannot give money instead of trophy's? We have a guy in our club who is adamant that it is against the law to do this. I know several of you are involved with clubs that utilize cash paybacks. I'd like a little feedback on this subject. Thanks in advance, LRN

Pulls that pay money bring in more tractors. Will you allow newer tractors to pull? Where is your club located, I live in Central Michigan also?

I say pay some money back. That is why I go to the county fairs to pull anymore in Central Michigan. If I am fortunate enough to win or place I want a little monetary compensation for travel expenses, entry fee"s and maybe something to eat. Occasionally I"ll go to a good trophy pull, but if you want the good competition to show up pay some money. Where is your club located in Central Michigan?

Depends on the type of show you want to put on. Around here the big HP "open" tractors only show up at ribbon pulls for test and tune - in their opinion not worth the wear and tear on the machine for a ribbon.

But if you're just looking to put on a good traditional "antique" pull stay away from going to a $$ pull - people get all wierd about little stuff they never would have worried about if they were only pulling for a ribbon. Put $$$ out there to "earn" and suddenly a group of guys who could get along great last year think that the guy(s) going home with the checks are cheating this year - even though they probably were beat by them in the past. People don't mind bringing their "stock" tractor to a pull and paying $5 to support the club their pulling with and have a little fun - even if they do get beat. But when they need to pay $10 and half of that goes down the road with another guy who has a bit more than "Stock" people go away with hard feelings and sometimes don't return with the stuff that is more stock. Soon you only have a couple of tractors showing up and the bills aren't getting paid anymore because there aren't enough hooks to pay them, and the tractors that are showing up are probably former division III and IV type tractors that thought it would be fun taking the division II type guys $. In my opinion not worth the aggrevation of putting on a $$ pull if pulling stock-like classes.

well said. i like the idea of having little at stake, trophic, hat, etc rather than money. but i pull in the stock class, just there to enjoy the sunshine and get the tractor out of the garage.

Pay back is simpler, no hassle ordering trophies ect. I used to think trophies were neat, after I passed 200 I realized cash puts gas in the tank! I pull a div. 3 tractor

With the rising cost of fuel it sure would be nice to put it back into the expenses that I incure during the pulling season.
I think a 50 % pay back is very fair to the pullers and organization that is conducting the pulls, everyone wins!
This is one the reasons the USAP organization continues to grow with pay back and fair rules.
