Hello everyone. Last summer I started for the first time doing antique tractor pulls in my home state of Maine. Our club pulls have rules that require tractors to remain with standard equipment only including wheel weights. No hanging weights etc. They have to have the same horse power they had new. I pull an Allis Model B in the 2000 and 2500 class and did quite well. My question to everyone is this. I want to get another tractor to restore and pull. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what make and model will be most competitive in a stock antique pull? My heart would love to get a Farmall H, but several people have told me they do not do very well at all in pulls. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

you might have seen it this past summer pulling. a good friend of mine wanted to pull , so i let him use it.it was there with his ford 900.you can't miss it ... it's the one with the chrome grill.. dave

i would have to go with what phil said. i had a 1951 JD "B" that i pulled with for two years and not once did she run out of power. like phil said, they have the creeper 1st gear so they will just continue to move right along. plus, it is a lighter tractor.

Herb, It sounds like you have the light classes covered. If it were me and I wanted to pull in the middle weight classes, so 4500-6500, I would use a farmall M or Oliver 77 or 88 depending on weight clases. If you want an Alice a WD45 is a strong tractor, but they appear somewhat hard to balance. If you are going into the heavy classes, 7500+, despite how rechedly awkward they are, it is hard to beat a JD 620, 720, or the same sizes in the 30 series. From what you posted you are considering Farmall, and that's great, but if it were me, I try to get an M of some sorts, Vs an H. Good Luck Greg H.

Me and Jeff Oliver talked about this,how bouts a G Allis Chalmers in the 900lb farm class?Naaw,just kiddin but in all reality there benifits in all of em.There are gonna be biased opinions and genuinly truthful ones here but the ole 6 speed JD's are tough stockers and I am an Oliver fan.I seen a 620 JD right out of the field and rusty drag a transfer sled out the end of a 200 plus feet track beating a 730 and a 4020 Deere tractors where speed wasn't a factor and never did strain the engine with the creeper gear.

a farmall M is your best choise. the stock engin is strong and the gering is about right. also it is a tractor that at lest around here is easy to git and git parts for i would think this would also be the same for you.finly they can git farly light with miner things tacken off. now don't git me wrong the man talking about an MM U knows what he is talking about also they have just as good of an engen as a M but there gering is one to fast and one to slow also the tractors and parts are more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and harder to find but they still pull right out there with an M MM U also good choise

and as far as two lunger JD go stay a way for many resons

To answer your question about the H, it does rather decent. I got an old 100% stock 100%original farmall H and last season i pulled in the 4500lb class. It only weighed in around 4300 and the hitch is rather low, however it suprised me. There were modified H's and all other brands had some pretty wild cheaters and i got 3rd place. There were two identical Stroker JD A's that got 1st and 2nd.

The late-model B John Deere is a good choice for your needs, for a couple reasons. It has a "creeper" first gear, so you never run out of engine torque. Even with weights, it will always "spin" out rather than "power" out. And it weighs about 4300 lbs, so you can haul it on a standard car trailer.

I have to agree with a Deere. The A is a very good pulling tractor in the stock division but needs a little weight up front. Be sure it has a straight six trans. also.

Stock Olivers do good also. I have a 77 that is stock and it does fail in a true stock class. Do they limit you to stock size tires also or is there a little leeway to those?

Not being a smart donkey but rather serious in how the club keeps tractor stock rpm and horsepower? I have yet to see anyone at all including myself at hte pulls i go to be complete stock. Just wondeirng the rules of your club/how they check maybe help the wild cheating that goes on that i see. As to answer your question I dont know what weight class your looking at but the 2 banger johnny's do very well

the club allows 700 rpm on the pto..they are easy on some tire combos... stay away from the jd"s not a real fan of the farmall 's either..
