What is the most horsepower that is attainable from an 820 john Deere if a person goes all out and tweaks it everyway possible wanting at least 1 hp per cubic inch

Several years ago, A guy in North Carolina had an 830 named MR. GANGREEN. Supposedly it was one of the nastiest 2 cylinders ever to hook to a sled. I heard rumors of around 250 hp. 1 hp. per cube will never happen on a 2 cyl. JD.

There was a post on this board some months ago where some character is casting 8.0 inch bore R,80,820,830,840. If extrude honed, fancy valve/seat job and port matched. Along with Albert's at Renaissance Tractor modified 13mm injection pumps. Then with a set of Steve Crum intake and exhaust pipes. Maybe 125HP to 150 HP while somewhere between 1200 and 1800 rpms with 471 cu inch.
200HP would need the 8.0 inch bore and stroked.
Just a Whipple bypass supercharger driven off the belt pulley and Albert's injection pumps would make 150+HP real easy at 1250 rpms. The superchargers are a dime a dozen off Buick 3800 engines.

I think I've read about a 830 somebody had that turned something like 3000 or 3500 rpm and made 200+ horsepower. So unless you're willing to go WELL past that ridiculous level, what you want probably isn't in the cards.

Seems like I remember an Everly Brothers song about that. I can't remember all the words, but the chorus starts out something like "Dream, dream, dream, dream, dream. Dream, dream, dream..." Just havin' fun.

1 hp per cubic inch displacement is only achieved in high rpm engines of 6000 plus rpm. At best you may get 1500 rpm out of an 820 engine and since hp is a function of torque and rpm, you are going to fall short.

I have heard of these motors making upwards of 200 hp but that was after they were bored and stroked to over double the factory displacement. I think realistically you are looking at a max of 1/4 hp per cubic inch and that is really pushing it.

Not always. There are a lot of 450-600HP 360 CID dodge cummins pickups. The best ever dynoed is over 800HP at the rear wheels. You can get 360HP below 2500rpm on them real easy. Heck a new stocker is 325.

You are forgetting about 2 cycle detroit diesels. 1 HP/cu.inch is easy with turbo and at about 3000 RPM.

I've never heard of an 8V-92 running at 736+ hp before or a 8V-71 at 568 hp or a 6-71 at 426 hp and the list goes on. I would be interested in seeing such a thing. Maybe I can tune up the 435 and get 106 hp out of the little 2-53!

Not sure what is acheivable from 2-53. I do know that a bone stock 4-53 turbo turns 170 h.p. all day long at 2800 rpm. N70 injectors and three 5/16 flat washers in the gov. (about 3100 rpm)and it will make over 200. Note: This is without doing any real high performance work.In fact only about 2 hrs. labour(including taking the hood off and on)and $280 for the injectors.A friend of mine who spent the majority of his career working for Detroit diesel claims 1 1/2HP/cu in. is possible with some major work, and the right parts.

The silver series 6V-92 Detroit stock HP is 350, 552ci, Im sure you could get 552HP out it no prob, The super semi NTPA class has trucks with 12V-71 Detroits and said 2000HP on the side,

I do not think he was talking about factory settings or ratings. Fo that matter if you want som high ratings check out boat or better yet military settings/ratings. Even the military isn't interested in a full time smoke screen generator though.

As far as the ratings mentioned, I think you get there without the urbo at that rpm or would come very close.

With the right pieces and parts and a good Detroit guy doing the building and tuning, I'll bet you could get 1 hp. per cube out of a 3-53.

You'll never do it. I have build dirt late model engines, and it can be a struggle sometimes to achieve a USEABLE 1 hp per cubic inch. Never out of a natually aspirated 2 banger diesel, never with a turbo 2 banger diesel. It is a great idea, and I have always liked the big 830's, but the technology isn't there. I am not putting anything down here, but if that was attainable, I sure would like to see Beggeman's 1471 cube Moline run down the track....

What do you mean by 'useable' 1hp/1ci out a late model engine? I would think a good late model engine should be getting pretty darn close to 2hp/1ci.
