I am not new to the farm but am to pulling. I would like to pull in the 5500# to 6500# farm stock classes. I have no loyalties to color or brand and would like the opinion of Ya'll on what to start with to be competetive without selling the farm to do it. I have between $4000 and $5000 (allowance from wife)to play with on this project. Just wondering what you would do with this amount of money if you could start from scratch. Thanks in advance, Chris East

For value per dollar as a puller, it's going to be pretty hard to beat a late-styled Deere "A" or "B". The creeper gear means even a stock engine should be able to spin the rear tires in first gear at any reasonable weight. They're also pretty much dirt-cheap in pretty much any area of the country, parts are very plentiful new, used and aftermarket. I recently watched a pretty nice '51 "A" with new rear rubber and a 6-3 Power-Block sell for $1200. Fortunately, a good friend of mine bought it. As it sits, that tractor will probably make a solid 50+ horsepower, and in the low hole should be competitive up to 7500 lbs. in Div. II.

Hey Chris, Why leave out the masseys? 1958 65 gas weighs 3843 has 46 hp = 83.54 Beats any farmall ever built.

Sounds like your leaning toward the farmalls.I like Moline's but a 460 has alot of potential. The TA will give you alot of gear options & alot of future upgrades. Let us know what you do. Most important is have fun.

I do lean a little bit Farmall, only because they are cheaper, easy, and what we are use to around home. Molines and Oliver are scarace. But that's the only reason

I don't believe that farm stock, division II etc is all about horsepower. I believe it's all about traction (tires) and balance. I paid $950 for my 1951 John Deere 'A' and $600 for my wife's 1947 John Deere 'B'. To see how we did in our local club go to MATPA.home.att.net. Click on points in division II. We spent some money for enhancements but not anywhere near your $4,000 budget.

FIRST OFF SOUNDS LIKE YOU GOT A GOOD WOMEN THERE. NEXT GET A U OR UB MOLINE PUT IN A SET OF 4.81 PISTONS GET A G CRANK TO FIT YOUR U RODS PUT IN A 670 CAM AND INTAKE. WORK ON CARB SOME AND GO AND HAVE A BALL. I SUPPOSE MY POINT IS MOLINES ARE CHEAP TO BUILD AND PARTS ARE INTERCHANGEABLE.YOU CAN GO BIGGER VERY EASY. BE FORE WARNED ITS VERY ADDICTIVE.

if your pulling in Farm Stock with a speed limit honestly most anything will do good. Around here A and G deeres are competitive as are Farmalls and Olivers. Not alot of Molines around so I don" really know but theyare really tough in the open or MPH classes. Used to the Deeres and Farmalls were about I in this area and I brought in an old Oliver 88 that does well.

Until you get into the open clsses with the cut tires and faster speeds most anything will work. If your planing upgrading later and going to bigger, faster stuff I would go with an Oliver or farmall. Parts to hot rod them are easy to get and you can do alot with them for not alot of money.

Hehe no efore I start a color war here.. between me and my son we pull a Farmall SuperM, and Oliver 88, a massey 44. and a John Deere 60 so I have a raimbow to choose from. The 88 works really good inthe 4500-6000 with the best being 5500. Super M. 6000 + Pulled it a 7000 and it didn"t lose power there. JD 60 is 6500 and up as that is as light as we get it. The massey is pulled in Farm Stock as in factory drawbar and stuff and it does ok.

For the money you have to spend you should be able to get one of about any color and compete , just remember that you can"t win them all :) But it sure is fun trying..LOL!!!!

Min has pressed steel wheels but still has the hysraulics, PTO belt pully gear box and the havey hub on it. I can normally get in 5000, nd depending on the scales, how much they allow on weights, and getting my son to drive I have had it in 4500.If you strip it down I am sure 450 would be easy and maybe 4000

3.5MPH and they have to be on the market prior to 1960(for instance a Farmall 560 or 530 JD)and I am not opposed to going lighter on weight and The $4000 to $5000 is just to start out with, Maybe for the first year. I would like to start in the stock classes so it doesn't take such a massive amount of money just to get in but I still want to be somewhat competitive. How do I get there starting from scratch?

Chris,
I"ve been pulling Minneapolis-Molines for several years on a tight budget. A U or UB was about 46-52 horsepower. My stock M-M U weighed 5350# and competed well in dead-weight classes. Not bad for $1000. Dad and I put a U military engine in his UB (longer stroke) to get about 65 horses. It competes very well in 5500# for about $1750. Right now I am preparing my 1946 U for a 403 G engine. I will have $1400 in to the whole thing and should weigh around 5000# and have 75-80 horsepower or so. M-M tractors are so interchangeable, you could have a beautiful stock appearing show piece and 125 horsepower for very little cash. M-M 4 cylinders can reach 250 h.p. with mucho bucks. The tractors really lighten up well too! They With your $5000, you could go pretty far. Feel free to call me or e-mail anytime. I"m always happy to bring another puller to enjoy the yellow machines.

Chris your looking at the wrong moline. 22hp is about what a RTU is. Look at a UB or 5star. Not hard to get a G down to 5500.

If you are on a budget, get out of the heavy competitive classes. Drop down where the HP isn't as critical.

I have been doing some research on this and this is what I came up with as far as stock power to weight ratio. What I dont know is the values of these tractors or the amount it cost to add horsepower. The 460 and 560 Farmall are in the top three and they are cheaper on initial purchease than almost anything green. However I do realize that most JD's have the 1.5 MPH creaper gear. Just a thought, That's why I threw this out so I could hear several perspectives on this.

TRACTOR MAKE WEIGHT Hp #'S/HP ratio
IH FARMALL 560 5898 54.8 107.62773
OLIVER SUPER 77 4320 39.25 110.06369
IH FARMALL 460 5263 45.3 116.18101
IH FARMALL SUPER H 3875 30.6 126.63398
ALLIS CHALMERS D-17 4659 36.7 126.94822
JOHN DEERE 720 6790 53 128.11320
IH FARMALL 450 5803 45.1 128.66962
OLIVER 880 5640 42.8 131.775700
JOHN DEERE 620 5900 44.1 133.786848

Thanks, Chris

It depends on whether this is going to be a work in progress or not. If it is a work in progress, (my opinion only) I would get a John Deere G. If this is a one time only amount you have to spend, (once again my opinion only)I would look for a John Deere A that"s had some engine (bored and stroked)work done on it. If you look on pulloff.com or other classifieds you occasionally come across tractors already built and setup for pulling. I will say one thing, and that is the 6000 and 6500 LB. classes are usually the most competitive classes to pull in. I used to pull these classes, and they have become so competitive horsepower wise that I have went to a heavier class. This is only my opinion, others will certainly have there opinion also.

I pull farm stock classes in Central Michigan also. Some to almost half the tractors pulling in the 6000-6500 lb. farm stock classes have in the neighborhood of 100hp or more in many cases. So Farm Stock Stock Stock doesn"t always mean stock! It usually means STOCK APPEARING!

In the club I pull with farm stock is the class that is suppose to have stock tractors. The object is to have people join us that don't have enhanced power but enjoy pulling. It doesn't meet the objective to have them enter and get their b--tt handed to them on a platter by a tractor that isn't stock. Believe me when us guys know the tractors that enter this class. So far we haven't had much participation.

its better off to have a slow speed limit and let any tractor that wants to come....we have a stock .090 A with a lil head work done to it and it competes very well in the 5000, and some in the 6000 in farm stock classes in 2nd gear (1950 single stick A)...so a "STOCK" tractor can compete....most anyone that has a tractor will rebuild it...and a nice set of .045 aluminums will make it compete...so farm stock can still be farm stock and compete...

Get a 880 Oliver gas. Has around 60 horsepower stock. Can do little things and get 75 to 100 hp easy. You can pull 5500 all the way to 8000 competively. If it has a power booster you can pull up to 10000 lb with a reasonably stock tractor. 880's go for around 2500-4500 depending on condition.

I own a farmall super m, a moline g and gb. 3.5 mph must be an any gear pull, it's more fun to pull 5000lb to 7000lb than the opposite.
I am putting back together my super m to pull the same way you are, only 3mph ! The super m was my first tractor ! If you intend to stay in this bracket of drag racing, I would recommend the moline (u) or (ub) over all other brands, period !

Part's availability, performance reliability, and cost !
In my case, the guys driving molines in my country, think they got it all won before the season starts. !
There for I will be riding a Super M next year, because in midrange competition, she's a lethal weapon ! (but cost's more to get there !)
Have (fun) getting competitive, the rest is education and paying attenetion !

Spend every dollar as if it was your last !
my long 2 cents worth !
